OT Gibson Les Paul Junior

Just wondered if any of the guitarists on here owns one of these and if so, how do you rate them....strengths/weaknesses, playability, sound, handling - that type of thing. Thinking of getting one, it would be a new model.

Thanks

I have a Junior, see here: [www.iorr.org]

I just love it, it´s a very nice guitar, and the P90 just rocks.
Mine is satin finish, which makes the neck very comfortable, I think.
Easy to play, and the sound is just what I love in a guitar. So for my two cents, you can´t go wrong with one of these. More info here:

I've got a Junior,a '58 with a very good headstock repair, cherry red, double cutaway a la Keith. Agree with everything Vilhelm said, you can't go wrong with the sound of a P-90. Just used it for most of the rhythm bed tracks for our band's album with an Orange AD30 head through a single Celestion speaker and it sizzles.

I'm definalty going to go into a shop and try one out based on your reviews...the neck looks narrower than a Les Paul Standard, - am I correct in this ?

If you are going to buy LP JR. then buy a custom shop TV-yellow doubble cut if you want to have a similar one to the one Keith is using during midnight rambler.

I have a 60 double cut cherry, It kills for a certain sound, mostly rhythm, I play it thru a Victoria tweed 5112, a champ clone with a 12" speaker, really rocks. I needed to have one before they skyrocketed in cost so I got one without fully researching the nuances of the model. I also wanted the cherry like Keith had in early-mid 70's but wish I had a 58 or 59 as I like the thicker neck, a very Keith sound to say the least. In my perfect guitar world I would have the double cut tv finish... Go for it

I've got a double cut TV yellow from the stripped down line they released a few years ago and LOVE it. The P-90's are great. I did have to replace the tuners as that was one of the cost cutting items on those guitars but I love the way the finish is wearing and the P-90's are every thing I had hoped for. Not sure if the neck is narrower than a LP Standard. A bit of research at Gibson's site will probably allow you to check those specs. Also, as far as a partner for the Tele Deluxe... I've got a Fat Tele Deluxe and can confirm that it is a good partnership!

Peace,
Mr DJA

I have a '57 single cutaway (stock) and it's my favorite guitar. The only thing a little iffy is the stock uncompensated bridge/tailpiece. But I would hate to modify this guitar. It's too perfect. The P90 is ballsy as hell. Huge difference in the volume pot between, say 8, and 10. A real keeper.

I have an all original '60 Jr. and agree with all above- it sounds killer and is more versatile than you might expect for a one pick-up guitar.

A Junior can teach you a lot about tone and touch. Like Sam says...it's amazing how many different sounds are available from that lump of mahogany and single P90.
To let them out you have to learn about use of the guitar's volume/tone controls, different picking techniques and dynamics of touch.

Seems obvious...but it's something that some folks flicking between the five positions on a Strat [with everything on 11] never learn ! ;^)

its a great, solid and simple guitar but hard to play. very dry and "honest" sound. and it looks fantastic!

i have a white single cutaway. go for it!

What do you find hard about the playing? Of course it could be a matter of taste, but I find it very easy played.

Never found them hard to play, either. IMO it's the Telecaster that is the most unforgiving of well known electrics. Fluff a note on a Tele and it's there for all to hear, whereas I always find it easier to cover up mistakes on a Gibson.

I got a 1957 single cut sunburst which I bought in 2005, I got it for a bargain, 2800 EURO. The same model Keith used on IORR in 1994-95 and on the early part of the 1981 tour. It's a great piece which I used on many recordings, not live though, it's tooooo precious..... Buy an old if you can afford it, haven't tried a new model but shouldn't guitars be cheaper now, since the economy is going downhill...? Back in the early 80's here in Sweden they used to GIVE them away..MAD!!!

The only way to find out is to go to a store and play it. If you like it, buy it, if not, look for something else thumbs up

I got my 1957 for a steal because it had been badly refinished. I then had an original finish put back on by an expert. I was tempted to put another bridge on it like I did for my 2-pickup '61 Melody Maker, but resisted. I love this guitar, but now I have the fever to get the 2-pickuo version as well!

Thank you for all your comments and advice. You have definatly sold it to me and I'm going to try one out on Saturday. Having researched models and prices, the vintage ones are as expected very expensive but strangely, the new ones are only around £500 -£600. I'd have expected them to be more. I'd soooo like a double cut away, vintage, so might try new and old out and if the old is the business, I'll save up a while and even consider trading the Tele Deluxe in.

Mathijs sold me the LP Jr as the ultimate rock'n'roll guitar. I couldn't afford to buy his original at the time, but later got myself a cheap 87 reissue, then the 2009 single cutaway Jr when it came out and finally a TV Jr VOS when I found a cheap one on ebay. No doubt this is my favorite guitar. The three of them sound very different.

Playing this single pickup guitar on a single channel tube amp such as the Pro Jr or the Vibrochamp really teaches you a lot about how your fingers and the two pots can make a difference.

Not so suprising that the new ones are affordable. The original was designed as a budget model. Slab body, simple neck, one pickup. The high cost of the vintage ones only started to soar about 15 years ago.
