Taylor goes Berry, only once.

The only version of Bye Bye Johnny by the Stones with Taylor playing the solos.

Pretty cool. What show is this from, and does anybody know why Taylor did the solo there?

Amazing difference. Besides the tempo (or tape) being slower than most versions, Taylor's style really takes the punch and edge out of this song. It's too cumbersome and 'clean' in content and overall playing style. Keith's slash and burn was much more appropriate.

I agree that Keith's double-string style is more suited to the Berry songs, but this is still an unexpected delight to hear. And I repeat again - as I have many times - that, alleged "weaving" aside, there was nothing like the combination of these two guitars and guitarists onstage in this band or any other.

Well I knew you posted another 1972 version of this song some time ago, so I thought you would like this one too.

It's from the first show of the 1972 American tour:

Artist: Rolling Stones
Date: 1972-06-03
Location: Vancouver, BC Canada
Venue: Pacific Coliseum
Source: Audience
Lineage: 1st gen reels>Wav(96/24)>Wav(44.1/16)>flac
Transfer: 1st gen reels>Revox A77>Wavelab 96/24
Taping Gear: unknown mics>combo radio/tape recorder
Taped By: Dave Departee and Donn Amick
Transferred By: JEMS

I love both this (slow) version and the L&G (fast) version with Keith playing the solos. Just like Tele says: "And I repeat again - as I have many times - that, alleged "weaving" aside, there was nothing like the combination of these two guitars and guitarists onstage in this band or any other."

It's Chuck Berry included imo, with a bit more fantasy and dirty yet subtle feeling. Keith did a good job too those days,a bit more sloppy though. cool smiley

i'll take this over "weaving" any day - for me - that whole concept gets overstated and over-mythologized -

A unique show for the arrangement of this song, the setlist and the fact that Keith stood stage left and not stage right. Torn and Frayed is a favorite of mine. It does sound like the band is a bag of nerves on first night. It's a rickety start, but then Keith and Taylor find a groove the immediacy of which is thrilling.

Seems like they were going with the tempo of the Berry songs from '69 and '70, then decided to speed it up later on. Pity they didn't stick with the other Exile songs like Torn & Frayed and Ventilator beyond Vancouver.

If memory serves, it wasn't until the last San Fran show that Richards took the solo in BBJ.

Ok ... interesting. So Taylor had the solo from the beginning and then Keith took over. I think it was a good decision -- gives the show more variation since Taylor already plays so many solos. Keith's style fits the song better, but this is still great. Those early '72 shows are lovely to hear because, while perhaps sloppier, they aren't "cemented" in routine like the later ones.

The upping of the tempo was probably not completely intentional -- it came with the routine and all the coke. smiling smiley

Cool solo. Where did you get those photos from in the video? They're pretty awesome.

Photos are from bootlegs and also from IORR (posted by Copsnrobbers in that wonderful thread about the 1972 Tour, so thanks Cops!).

After the very first 1972 show (Vancouver, June 3) Richards does the BBJ solos already the next day in Seattle (both shows). Since then no Taylor solos on that song afaik.

To be honest: this live Torn and Frayed is my favourite version of that song, just because it literally expresses the content of the lyrics, like you already said.

In this version the band sounds so pure and vulnerable (especially the beginning and the end) in my ears that it really moves me. Like Lieb said: "Those early '72 shows are lovely to hear because, while perhaps sloppier, they aren't "cemented" in routine like the later ones."

Tele, I agree it's "pity they didn't stick with the other Exile songs like Torn & Frayed and Ventilator beyond Vancouver".

This Torn and Frayed was also my very first upload on YT:

I like it, too. Even though it turns into a trainwreck eventually. However, my favorite is Aragon 2002 with the lap steel and Keith's back up vocals. Not flawless, but honest and with the feel this song is all about.

same with " don't you lie to me " taylor has the first solo and jagger seems to encourage keith to do the last but between him and charlie they finish the song early . pity .
