Ron Wood on Paint it Black
Date: June 9, 2006 02:24

Does Ron actually play a sitar in this song live. He can't be up there with Geroge Harrison and Ravi SHankar.

No.Now we are attacking him for his playing of an instrument that he doesn't play?

I wince when Ron is about to play a sitar solo. Also, remember when he butchered the marimba solo on Under My Thumb in Winnemucca, 1999?

Alright, enough . . . if ANYBODY knock's Ronnie's mellotron skills one more time, I'm going to have to ask to take this outside!

I wince at George Harrison's sitar work, mostly due to the original songs on which he chose to play the instrument.

No, I guess it was Brian Jones who played sitar
on the recording of Paint it black.

Keith does that part on stage on guitar and Ronnie does play
guitar on stage!

We're talking about a rock and roll band here, not a
Indian sitar band with tablas and other percussion.

Been Stoned since 1964 and still am!

Ronnie uses an electric sitar-guitar (that's what he calls it, anyway!) on a few numbers -
i'm not sure what he's using it for on this tour, but in the past he used it on Street Fighting Man.
does anyone know what make it is? i thought it was a Danelectro, but a Danelectro connoisseur told me it isn't.

I don't like the way Ron plays the recorder on Ruby Tuesday and I absolutely his violinsolo on She's A Rainbow. Ruined the Songsmiling smiley

Here's a video (taken from rs.com) with Ron showing his guitars backstage, and give some info on which songs he uses them for. It's a good watch!

Erik, if that's the same footage of Ron with his guitars that's on the fanclub dvd, he mentions using the sitar-guitar on SFM,
but what is he using it for on this tour? i don't remember him using it on PIB in the past, but ... ?
what does Keith play on PIB?

>> do you have a more clear pic of the sitar-guitar? <<

i don't seem to, sorry! you can see it in Four Flicks, though, on SFM and JJF.
but what are they playing in that shot above from this tour - is it PIB??

with sssoul, I forgot to paste up the link for the Ronnie-guitar-video:

I don't have the fanclub-DVD, so I don't know if it's the same video.

Of course my post would be idiotic, without the link....like if it's of any use to you, that I've got a video in my hands.

smile: i was wondering if you intended to share that with us, Erik! :E
thanks, that is indeed the same clip that's on the fanclub DVD;
i see i forgot that Ronnie mentions using the sitar-guitar on JJF as well as SFM,
and that he says it was loaned to him for the Licks tour.

does anyone have footage that includes a current rendition of Paint It Black?
i'm really curious now what instruments the two guitarists are using on it these days.

There's audio of it on HotStuff, under the "Tokio Dome Recorded From Mick`s Micrphone !! "-thread. Perhaps it's enough to know....

on the current tour Ronnie uses the Electric Sitar, but sometimes he uses his regular Strat. Keith plays his blonde 60's Tele usually.

When the new Saitama, Japan DVD makes the rounds you will be able to see them do a recent version of PIB. You could also ask someone like Mathijs, who would no doubt be able to tell you everything you want to know about the Stones' guitars and who plays what on stage.

well ... Pohan's already confirmed what they play on PIB, hasn't he -
and we can see them in the photo i posted earlier.

What Wood uses now is not the same as a traditional sitar like the one B.Jones used not to mention, the fact that he doesn't use it all of the time.

That sitar is all over the Four Flicks.

I don't like the sound myself.

Re: Ron Wood on Paint it Black

What I meant was that he sometimes uses a Strat (like Pohan says) instead of the electric sitar/guitar on Paint It,Black these days.

Bill, Charlie's hands, Brian, Keith & Mick at a Ready Steady Go rehearsal of Paint It Black:

You've got to be kidding me: one person claims Woody plays the recorder (flute) on "Ruby Tuesday" and the violin on "She's a Rainbow" live in concert? Is this all true???

If so on both, what performances did he do so?

He used it on SFM,as well as on JJF and PIB on the BB tour.

These days there are guitar synthesizers perfect for the job.
I bet Ron can afford one.

Re: Ron Wood on Paint it Black

They've tried that. With Matt Clifford in 1989/90. You liked it? I didn't smiling smiley

And who would even want to hear Mick (and Keith) hum the PIB riff for one verse before "I want to see it painted/Painted black/Black as night/Black as coal" and then resume humming 'til song's end? And what about the audience humming along, too?

Is this where Woody's alleged fiddling comes into this picture?

It's tuned like a regular guitar but has a more sitar-like buzzing sound thanks to the flat bridge. Danelectro did the first version of the Coral Sitar in 1967.
