Sir Mick Jagger visits his old school in Dartford

Sir Mick met some of the children benefiting from Red Rooster

Sir Mick Jagger has been reliving his youth at his old school, Dartford Grammar School for Boys.
The Rolling Stone frontman opened an extension to its arts centre, the Mick Jagger Centre, ten years on from when he first launched the centre.
He also returned to see how the centre is working to foster new musical talent.
Sir Mick funds a project which delivers music tuition to over 150 local children.

The project, called Red Rooster, provides 150 young children music tuition at the centre as well as their own instruments. Red Rooster also delivers music classes in seven local primary schools.
The Mick Jagger Centre is equipped with recording and video studios as rehearsal rooms and gallery spaces.
Before officially opening the new extension to the Mick Jagger Centre, Mick said, "I've been given a very warm welcome, I was taken to the headmaster's office. It's always difficult to go into that room, without feeling a pang of some sort of guilt!"
During Mick's visit, Dartford Grammar and Red Rooster pupils gave a short performance of a variety of musical talents. Afterwards, Mick chatted to pupils, parents and staff.
Returning to Dartford, brings back "some incredible memories" to Mick.

The Rolling Stones started in the early 60s as a rhythm and blues cover band

Although, he no longer spends much time there it seems maintaining a connection with his hometown is important to Mick.
He said: "It's part of your consciousness, you're brought up somewhere for this very formative part of your life. I didn't move around I was just here. So, it helps to create you in a lot of ways."
While waiting to meet Mick, John Summerfield, red Rooster's double bassist specialist, said: "I think it's very important that the kids realise what an icon he is to Britain."
Michael Philip (Mick) Jagger was born and raised in Dartford. Both of his parents were teachers and he has a younger brother called Chris.
Mick attended Dartford Grammar School for Boys before going on to study business at the London School of Economics.
The Rolling Stones started in the early 1960s as a rhythm and blues cover band with Mick as the frontman.

Fantastic. Thanks for that, EG. It would be even better if he followed his brother's example of doing some gigs there!

Nice that he makes the point that making music isn't just about making money but something which gives pleasure throughout your life. Easy for him to say but true all the same.

Good for Mick. I'm sure their probably is a lot of charitable things he does that aren't publicized.

....OK call me a cynic...but you think it might also have just a little something to do with the unflattering autobiography from Keith coming out at end of summer?

Thank you for posting - though this was probably Jagger's first visit to the town since the last time 10-years ago!

I wonder how many times Keith has been back since he left for London in '62? I had read that he didn't return for 20-or-so years.

That's the thing about Mick, he gives a lot to charities close to his heart but seldom does he go public with it. That's the classy way to be a humanitarian. Those that give and make the big headlines I am always skeptical about....I wonder about their motivation. Mick does more than his share and stays in the shadows!

Is it still a boys only (grammar, if that, too?!) school?! If so, this has become a revived modern approach as boys have turned out to be the losers of the school system (at least, that's an issue in Germany).

I know Mick is genuinely passionate about this sort of thing and for him to visit his old school and town..well thats just something he would do anyway. If it was a kid and knew just a wee bit about Mick Jagger the Rock-star and he visited my school I would be so excited (and if I was a teacher as well..)..Micks a good example from someone from humble beginnings that if ya passionate about something no matter what it maybe you can be a success.Micks someone ya can look up to especially if ya into music and songwriting.

You can imagine the headmaster saying to all the kids at assembly time.Today we are going to have a famous visitor at our school and hes a the most famous Rockstar in the world..Mick Jagger and hes the lead singer in The Greatest Rock Band in the World..The Rolling Stones and he used to live in this town and go to this school..the kids would be WOW..WOW..COOL..and the teachers and parents to.
