The Rolling Stones Blues Project Thread

As an Avid Stones Fan and by Virtue a Huge Blues Fan I thought it would be interesting to develop this thread from a musical standpoint, being a musician myself and also for the musicians and fans here.

The Stones biggest influence is by FAR the blues, so I would like to post the original recording of a blues song the Rolling Stones have covered followed by their version.

By hearing the original then their interpretation, I think it would be interesting how they recorded, changed, modified, or stayed close to the original.

I think it would reveal ALOT in their musicianship, choice of songs, playing style, ability and influences.

Enjoy. I hope you like the following posts and appreciate the great songs!
Please feel free to add anything guys!

Recorded in Jan. 1964 at Regent Sound Studios London.
Slim Harpo's "I'm A King Bee"

Great Blues Song from one of the master's - I believe it was recorded in '57?

"Well my heavy throbbers itchin' just to lay a solid rhythm down"

Willy Dixon wrote it, and recorded a version called "Youth to you" with Memphis Slim.
This is the way Muddy Waters recorded it in 1954 and changed the titel to
"I just wanna make love to you".

Our boys speeded it up quite a bit (sorry for the video)

"The Little Red Rooster" one of the greatest blues songs of all time!
Willie Dixon wrote it, but Howlin' Wolf made it his.

In comparing the tracks I wouldn't have minded Stu being included in this in a more prominent role on keys like the original.

I think this song was chosen by Brian to be recorded to show-off his Amazing slide playing, and I don't blame him one bit.

Nobody was playing slide like Brian at the time. Of all the member's Brian was Blues biggest fan. He always wanted to stay rooted in the blues even when the M.J/K.R. songwriting team went more pop.

They must have a special place for this song since they have played it live from '64 to '03, again recorded at regent in '64

'Mississippi' Fred McDowell 'You Gotta Move'

What a piece to cover!

Started in Muscle Shoals, Alabama as documented in G.S.
& Polished off at Olympic, Keith plays a National guitar on this
and you can really it too!

Beautiful! Love Charlie's little BOOM-BOOM at the end

Mick T. on slide w/ a fender tele

Sadly, last played live in '76, even as great as it is on Sticky, I always thought it was better live!

You've Got To Move goes back to The Two Gospel Keys 1946 ....

The Two Gospel Keys - Emma Daniels/Mother Sally Jones
were gospel street singers from the Atlanta area.... You've Got To Move was recorded in New York in early '46 ...

Not sure if they wrote it but they were the first to record it .......

The cool thing about Muddy's Still A Fool
is that Little Walter's on guitar and Leonard Chess on bass drum...

Two well known versions by Little Walter & Chuck Berry round the late '50's, originally by Jay McShann
...
The Stones did a great job covering this.

I wonder where they heard this first, & whose version they decided to cover?

I'm kinda leaning towards Little Walters version.

Recorded in June '64 at Chess Studios

They should release the Ian Stewart tribute concert (23 Feb 1986):
Route 66 (Bobby Troup) - Down The Road Apiece (Tony Raye) - Key To The Highway (William Broonzy/Charles Segar) - Confessin’ The Blues (Walter Brown/Jay McShann) - Mannish Boy (Mel London/Ellas McDaniel/McKinley Morganfield) - Bye Bye Johnny (Chuck Berry) - Harlem Shuffle (Bob Relf/Ernest Nelson) - Little Red Rooster (Willie Dixon) - Down In The Bottom (Willie Dixon) - Dust My Blues (Elmore James) - Little Queenie (Chuck Berry)

I like Bo Diddley's better.

Agreed! Mick doesn't even come close to Diddley's singing.
