I guess so....

After? Both bands formed in 1962, though Quo had a different name back then. Isn't Pretty Things still active? And The Shadows toured recently. I dunno...

The Blind Boys Of Alabama - since 1939!

Two of the original members are still in the band, although one doesnt tour too much due to health reasons.

Two other founding members died in 2005 and 2009.

The Stones are mere pups by comparison.

Quo has only ONE original member, though (Francis Rossi).

Wrong! Rick Parfitt is also an original member and still in the band!

Re: Is Status Quo the second oldest band after the Stones?

Nope. Parfitt joined them four years later:

Wikipedia: Formation

The origins of Status Quo were in the rock and roll freakbeat band "The Spectres" formed in 1962.[3] Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster met at Sedgehill Comprehensive School, Catford, and were members of the same orchestra. They started a band called The Scorpions, later changing the name to "The Spectres". Rossi and Lancaster played their first gig at the Samuel Jones Sports Club in Dulwich, London. In 1963 they added drummer John Coghlan.[6] They began writing their own material and after a year met Rick Parfitt who was playing with a cabaret band called The Highlights. By the end of 1965 Rossi and Parfitt, who had become close friends, made a commitment to continue working together

OK, but they were not Status Quo before Parfitt joined. As they chose the name "Status Quo" in 1967 Parfitt was also a member.

True, but the Quo is using 1962 as the year they started, regarding anniversaries etc.

QUo's Anniversaries vary, in 1982 they celebrated 20 years since they were fromed in 62 under Spectres and traffic Jam banner. Only treu original members are Lancaster and Rossi who own(ed) the rights. lancaster was bought out in 1986. Parfitt joined Quo after there Butlins stint in 66 that's why all of a sudden they celebrated 25th anniversary in 1991.....with Anniversary Waltz etc. Later on they did 35 years of Quo and "recently" mentioned 40 years of Quo in 2002........and later agian with Pictures Live in 200?? 40 years of Quo...Who cares, they are old, bald and ugly but still know how to pack a punch live. Saw them in Oostende Belgium a couple of days back in a casino where they actually tore the roof off the place sounding harder, better and tighter than ever despite the swaltering heat! If You Can't Stand The Heat....Get Out Of My Casino!! :-)

Okay, so what IS the oldest "band" that still has ALL of its original members? I say the Everly Brothers, who scored their first hit in 1957.

Thats cheating a bit, tatters. They split for about ten years in the 70s and havent made a new record in over two decades. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Status Quo never had one hit in the United States. That is a bit strange isn't it? Did they ever tour here?

Its not that strange. Plenty of bands are huge in one country and dont 'translate' elsewhere. The Grateful Dead, for example, were never big in the UK.

Yes, they actually did MANY times in the early 70's and again a few times this decade! Saw them at Roseland in NYC 4 years ago or so and the place was packed and heard Bob Rock (poducer) and Lars ulrich (Metallica) were also visiting some shows this tour and rocked out as they are lifelong fans!

Quo had actually one hit in the US in 1968 Pictures Of Matchstickmen. Except for the US they have been/are huge everywhere. Touring 365 days a year for crowds ranging from 1500 to 50.000. That's quite an achievement!

I would have thought in the U.K. that The Shadows formed about 1957-8 have been going the longest. They still have 3 original members or 4 counting Cliff Richard in the band.I think they did a tour with Cliff last year sometime. smileys with beer

It's cheating only in that a duo probably cannot be considered a band. Your brother is still your brother, even if you once went ten years without speaking. They DID tour with Simon & Garfunkel (who themselves made a record, as "Tom and Jerry", that charted only a few months after Phil and Don's first hit), in 2003-04. In the overall scheme of things, that's recent enough for them to still be considered a POTENTIALLY active band, even if they HAVE declared themselves to be "retired".

Pictures Of Matchstickmen reminds me of this song.

I wouldn't call Status Quo a world-class group. And I think the Grateful dead has had a lot of successful tours in Europe, even if they never had a lot of hits. My guess is that the Dead were pretty popular.

Whats that got to do with the discussion. They're still a hugely successful band.
Most people worldwide think the Stones are shit as well.

They may be successful in Europe. In America, no one has ever heard of them. That was my point.

The Rolling Stones are/were popular everywhere in the world. Let's not put the Rolling Stones and Status Quo in the same category, please!
