'Emotional Rescue' - Why never live?

Not that I'm a huge fan of this track, but wasn't it a big international hit for the band? It seemed like the '81/'82 tours that they were really pushing songs from 'Some Girls,' Emotional Rescue' and 'Tattoo You' in order to, I'd presume, garner a new, younger audience.

So why then was this big hit overlooked on stage?

Too difficult to sing live, I would imagine.

Doubt it would have worked in the stadium shows they were playing, too.

Plus the fact that its not very good.

Agree with Gazza. Tricky falsetto. And it's shite.

always liked it - it was in the running for the theater show setlist on the licks tour - in fact it was rehearsed at the orpheum the day before the gig....

Falsetto vocal and a lack of guitars.

One of the very, very few Stones songs that I simply cannot listen to. Maybe they could have done something good with it in a live setting - anybody heard the rehearsed version?

Couldn't have said it better.
IMHO the worst Stones single ever.
And that includes "Streets Of Love".

His voice reminds me of the Castrato's, thinking of this something is rapidly shrinking between my legs

The Castrato

Castration in boys between the ages of seven and twelve prevents the larynx from undergoing the normal physiological changes associated with puberty and enables boy sopranos to keep their large vocal range throughout their lives. While some testosterone continues to be produced by the adrenal glands, the reduced sex hormone levels in their bodies results in other physical changes including lack of facial hair, physical tallness, smooth skin, rounding of the hips and a high speaking voice. The very term "castrato" or "eunuch" was often considered offensive and words such as "musico" or "virtuoso" were preferred (political correctness has a long history).

Sometimes thigs go wrong............

Giovanni Velluti

There are different traditions concerning why Giovanni Velluti was castrated as a young boy. Born in Montolmo, Italy in 1780, his father had planned a military career for him but this plan changed abruptly when Giovanni developed a high fever. According to the most common legend, his parents had taken him to a local surgeon for treatment and the surgeon, mistaking the parents` intentions, castrated Giovanni instead. That marked the end of any military career for the boy and he was sent to be trained as a singer.

The boys can't play the song live, that's the reason. They don't know how to play it.

Why shouldn't they? What's so difficult about it?

I like the song. Actually the Smashing Pumpkins played it live - not the whole song though - with only guitar(s), it sounded great.

I like the song (for some reason) but I doubt it would work in front of a crowd of 50,000+ and it's too hard to sing.

+ and it's too hard to sing.

Well, actually I was told by a friend who is a pro singer that once you learn how to sing falsetto, it is physically easier to sing this way rather than the normal way.

This is in my top 5 favourite Stones tracks of all time. My favourite in the last 30 years. I think if they really wanted to they could make this a great track for club and arena performances. Just look at Dance Part 1 from the Olympia. Given the same treatment this could be great.

They could do this tune. If they're doing Worried About You then they could do this. Mick can sing Worried About You then he could sing Emotional Rescue. That's the dumbest excuse I've heard yet - he couldn't sing it. BOLLOCKS.

And I do think it would go over rather well. In fact, it would be huge - possibly even bigger than the overdone tired boring Miss You.

They still insist on doing Undercover. ER is a much more laid back tune.

I think the song is a joke - a good joke. The lyrics and Jagger's vocals are funny - always make me smile (and watch his face in that video - priceless!). Of course it is not any sort of classic but the band still had guts to do whatever they felt like. It is a middle finger statement to any expectations we have might have of the band and of its music. But luckily it is quite unique try, and they didn't continue with that kind of style...

The song does come off as a joke - or a really big wink and a nod. It is funny. It's got a brilliant melody and it's a brilliant tune. But as Mick said, it's something that would only ever come from being in a studio. It's not something they would write.

Which I find to be funny as well - they still wrote it.

I think both Emotional Rescue & Sweet Thing have potential if Mick sings
entirely in a regular/NON-falsetto voice....I think they'd sound better.

IORR............but I like it!

Actually I have the feeling that they might even do it in their next tour - and that's the song they need to do with Bill Wyman as a guest!!

Like Skipstone argued here, I think Mick with his trained voice could do it easily.
