The first Stones "Classic" ??

Many may point to As Tears Go By OR The Last Time, but I have to say i.m.o. Blue Turns To Grey was their first true classic penned Jagger/Richards song.

The weaving of the guitar's ... the theme.. the overall sound... I think this is the launching pad for their overall early sound.

The lyrics are deep. And beautiful haunting melody.

"Well my heavy throbbers itchin' just to lay a solid rhythm down"

I always liked the song myself, but it can't be called a classic for the simple reason that no one really has ever really heard the song. It was recorded and never heard from again.

Even if I like(d) the songs mentioned the first REAL classic must be Satisfaction.

Not really true -it has been covered by many artists, and the song has been used in several films, documentaries and, bizarrely, funerals.

I believe the correct word here would be the first warhorse...

My guess is that material like "Blue Turns to Grey" was the type of music that Brian Jones preferred. It was promptly tossed overboard for stuff like Have You Seen Your Mother Baby and Mother's Little Helper.

It was around this time that Mick switched to a more ragged, discordant vocal sound.

Thank you Mathijs... and I'd like to clarify what I meant by classic! I'm not talking top of the charts #1 classic.. but i.m.o. it is the first classic Jagger/Richards penned song that was highly original and could show what they could do and where they were going.

"Well my heavy throbbers itchin' just to lay a solid rhythm down"

Satisfaction period.

If you ask a casual Clasic rock fan, most have never heard of Tell Me.

Again I wasn't talking commercial success, I talking bout a brek through in thier writing and maturity in songwriting.... just because a certain percentage of people never heard a certain song, doesn't make it any less great....

So it Satisfaction was a small 60's b-side hit that barely anyone heard it wouldn't still be great??

that's not logical...

And His Majesty Heart of Stone - Much Agreed!!

Blue Turns to Grey was basically a very standard pop song for the era. It wasn't exceptional in that 99 percent of the rock fans never even heard it once, and the stones never played it in concert.

Lady Jane . . . now that was a classic. They reached the heights with that song, and never reached it again.
