Taking a break from listening to the Stones, listening to Zenyatta Mondatta for the first time in years. I'd forgotten what an incredible album this is.
The Police were a fine group (while they lasted), and this (to me) is their peak.
It's interesting... I LOVE the Police but only in the context of their albums as each has its own vibe and feel. I can play any album straight through but I don't enjoy their songs in compilation form, or live for that matter.
Make your own comp and it's amazing how many songs have been on the radio. It's like Tom Petty - it's simply astounding how many 'hits' there are, whether they really are a hit or not is moot.
The point I'm making is that, with the Stones (and to varying degree lesser of a catalogue wise with Pink Floyd and AC/DC and The Beatles and The Who etc), there's such a huge catalogue to do that with. But with bands that have a minuscule discography or solo artists that have, let's just say, a lot less albums than the Stones, it's quite astounding to understand just how pervasive their songs have been over the years.
After not caring too much for the first two Police albums, Zenyatta was the one that made me think, "Maybe these guys really aren't too bad after all". Then I was absolutely blown away by Ghost In The Machine and Synchronicity (not to mention Dream Of The Blue Turtles). After that, I came to appreciate the early stuff.
Not as good as Regatta, but what an album! Of course, like all Police albums, its a mixed bag of shit, truly great and god knows what music. Don't Stand So Close to Me (the original, not the lame remake) was great. Tears & World are incredebly great. Canary I still haven't made up my mind. Voices is pure genius. Bombs (like most of copeland's stuff, who knows) Do Do Do, De Da Da Da is a real turd, Camel I always loved, Suitcase Stopping close to be a turd, Shadows in the Rain is one of the best songs ever written by any band!
