100 Years Ago: Unique Stones Song
Posted by: flilflam ()

This is an unusual song and one of my favorites from Goat's Head Soap. It is difficult to classify too. Is it hard rock, a ballad, both, or something else? I counted four melodies or melody variations, and at least three changes in tempo. Yet, it seems to hang together well as a unit.

I have never heard a Stones song with so many twists, turns, and surprises as this one. Any thoughts?

Why not in stereo, flilflam?

It's an amazing song and as a composition it's really special and more complicated than most Stones songs. It's a story, told by the lyrics but even more by the music and especially by the musical changes that succeed each other very fluently and match with the lyrics very well.

a shame they gave up on it so soon on the euro tour that year - had promise, i thought - an excellent vehicle for mt to demo his wah-wah skills...

I am glad to see so many posts in support of 100 Years. I have always liked it, especially the part when it seems to "take off" at the end.

Greetings from the Jersey Shore.

Great song. Different territory for the band. This was before Billy Preston's influence became too much. It's just right here. Taylor is magical, or course. Mick is writing lyrics of real emotion and singing with conviction. It does sound like two or three song fragments strung together. The "lazy bones" part is definitely different from the rest. Not much (or any?) Keith here. Seems like another Jagger/Taylor construction.

a very strange song but always loved it. first time i heard it was on 8 track and was split into 2 parts . first part ended with please excuse me as i hide away and then it would click to the next part with call me lazy bones. decades later in my head i still hear the fadeout, the click, and the fade in of the 8track version because of that it made it seem like 2 different songs like dance pt 1 and pt 2

near the top of the list of keiths's crimes is his lack of interest in giving this song its live due. You can hear the band's lack of confidence on its few performances. This shouldn't have happened.

Hey - that is SO not fair! We had just finished having a fourway - what do you expect? Luckily Gazza and Tod kept to each other, otherwise I probably would have had full on laryngitis.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

Jagger isn't able to make such a relatively complicated composition on his own.

One of those interesting cases one can only speculate about. I guess Billy Prestons role
in the creation of the song can not be underestimated. But how, yeah, how did they go
about, writing this song?

One can only fantasize.

Of course, Taylor is involved, but not in songwriting. He played very fine over Mick´s melody.

Taylor played all guitars. No one told him I presume....So he is a big piece of the cake.....

Prog stones...

Probably Jagger's words and vocal melodies, Preston and Taylor having a large influence on the arrangement.

2000 Man is another kinda unique piece made up of sections.

Yes I did, it was on YT (removed now). See also this thread:

I didn't have any thought at all of 100 Years Ago when listening to it. A nice song, but not great to my taste (I didn't download it or something) and certainly not that complicated as a composition.

Because of his contributions to this song, it seems clear that Taylor should have been credited with co-writing. a lot of the comments in this thread are indicating that he was involved in more than just playing that great guitar on this track.
