Let's nitpick the Stones' studio albums
Posted by: punkfloyd ()

Several years ago I came across this website where somebody meticulously studied Led Zeppelin's studio recordings and noted of background noise, squeaky drum pedals, bad tape edits, production glitches, etc...

Here is the level of detail it goes into:
o "The Ocean" - A phone can clearly be heard ringing at about the
1:38 point in the song. The sheet music that accompanies the box
set has the word `ring' printed twice above the percussion tab
of this song, so the inclusion of the phone sounds like it was
intentional. As well as this, there is also the sound of the
squeaky bass drum pedal that is present on "Since I've Been
Loving" you, which is most apparent in the early parts of the
song. And, yet more odd noises occur at 1:59-2:00 and 2:12-2:13
where it sounds like someone is making the `c' sound, as in the
first letter of the word `cat'. Just as Bonham comes to "Two" in
the introduction you can hear the first five notes far off in the
distance, the result of some sort of production glitch.

I find this absolutely fascinating...although Bonham's squeaky bass pedal has ruined some Zeppelin songs for me forever.

Has anybody done the same sort of analysis of Stones recordings? I know Angie and Miss You have some ghost vocals on them. Anything else out there?

There is what seems to be a live guitar solo running through Hand Of Fate, I think, that can be heard under the overdubbed guitar solo.

I love all that stuff. Doesn't detract from the finished product at all, usually. There's ghost vocals very audible in "Hide Your Love".

I haven't seen anything but it would be interesting to read about. Good topic Mr. Floyd!

At the end of Street Fighting Man, Keith and Mick say "yeah" and "no" at the same time.

the original bridge of 'Beast of Burden' is quite audible below Jagger's overdubbed vocal.

The Stones are certainly known for bleed through vocally!

Plundered my Soul has this weird, overdubbed vocal track on top of some 40 year old guitar/bass/drum parts.

I apologize, I couldn't resist.

There's TONS of original-vocals bleeding into the overdubbed live ones on both Ya-Ya's and Love You Live. TONS! The worst is Honky Tonk on Ya-Ya's - Mick overdubbed that stupid (imo) verse about the sailors over the divorcee verse - it dones't take a lot of straining to hear the original one coming through.

Isn't Midnight Rambler and Love In Vain the only songs on Ya-Ya's that don't have vocal overdubs?

I have no idea about Love You Live. I always figured all of the songs have vocal overdubs, which is hilarious when you consider how bad the vocals are on 90% of the album.

Well, I'd agree to 75% of the album. I think the El Mocambo side is smokin'!

Starting from 1968 there's a lot of guide vocal bleed on studio recordings too.

The quiet moments in the middle of Midnight Rambler have some squeaks and an evil laugh (from Keith?).

Agree. It's a great 1/4 of an album. The other three sides are crap, a real crime to have the first version live version of Brown Sugar and YCAGWYW be these awful performances instead of '72 or '73. Never will undertsand why they just didn't release a whole show from El Mocambo. The sound was so much better and the performances were electrifying.

I wouldn't doubt about ya-yas skip for sure. The most glaring overdubs on Love You Live (where you clearly hear Mick's original voice without trying) are Star Star, Crackin' Up (the two voices are almost at the same volume!) and Sympathy.

The ghost vocals are guide vocals used earlier on in the recordings. They started doing that around the Beggars Banquet sessions

"Well my heavy throbbers itchin' just to lay a solid rhythm down"

I've often wondered about the sound at the end of "Prodigal Son".
It sounds like Keith maybe drops his pick and it hits the body of the guitar.

I love Bonham's squeaky kick. I am surprised it wasn't oiled a little more but when you have the greatest drummer of all time in the engine room who's gonna complain?

Good topic but apart from what's already been mentioned nothing springs to mind.

I think this is called backwards masking. Where the tape in the reel imprints on the layer it's next to. You may have noticed this on some of your old cassettes, where you faintly hear the intro of a song before it starts.

Someone here noted some old vocals (or something) under "spill the beans with you till dawn" on Loving Cup.

If you really turn up the volume in 'Love in vain' from Let it bleed there's the sound of something like a big pump or oil pump, or someone hitting with a sledgehammer in the background, just before the guitar intro.
In 'Midnight Rambler', just before the intro, I can hear music playing in the background for some very short time too.

On "Loving Cup" at around the 2:54 mark something is happening in the background... when Mick says "I'd love to spill the beans with you til dawn"... Sounds like a guide vocal in the background or god knows what

On the sacd version of the Let It Bleed album listen to You Can't Always Get What You Want. Just as the choir fades the guitar is on the right channel the french horn is on the left. Running from about 51s mark to approx. 55s mark you can hear some strange noise in the left channel. Best heard with headphones and balance all the way to the left turn up loud and you can hear Midnight Rambler. Listen and you will hear a harp. break part of MR!!!!!!!!
