Best:
a tie between:
Living Color and Guns & Roses, 1989 Steel Wheels Tour. LA Coliseum. LA.CA.USA
Prince,George Thorogood and The J Geils Band,1981 LA Coliseum LA. CA. USA

Worst:
Dave Mathews Band- 2006 ABB Tour. QWEST Field, Seattle,WA. USA. Bass and drums drowned out the whole band for the entire set.OOOOOF!!!
The Stones, however, sounded great.

Kracker - the Puerto Rican band that were signed to Rolling Stones Records were pretty awful at Wembley 1973. Sheryl Crow was great at Shepherds Bush 1999.
And Lynyrd Skynyrd were fantastic at Knebworth though not strictly a support act as it was festival.

John Miles Band was great in Stuttgart 1976. They replaced Robin Trower who had pulled out for some reason. Their smash hit 'Music' was high in the charts so everybody was into it. (Can't remember the Meters and Little Feat who opened also because at the time they did not mean much to me)
J. Geils Band was great in Munich 1982

German rockstar Peter Maffay was booed at the same concert and at more concerts because although he's a star in his own right in Germany he sounds pretty thin in between the J. Geils Band and the Stones.

The no-name bands at Munich 1990 and Stuttgart 2006 were forgettable. It was all heavy rock without any memorable songs ort moments so I forgot all about it.

It seems common practice to do a worse PA mix for the openers so the main act appears even better.

Johan Miles? Was that the Austrian tribute act to John Miles?

Actually, just remembered that The Meters were fantastic at Earls Court and were playing stuff off their brilliant Fire On The Bayou album. Jagger was pretty obsessed with them around 74/75, and helpoed inspired the move towards a funkier sound on Black And Blue and also Fingerprint File.

Rarely see opening acts anymore as I tend to be 'socialising' pre-show.

Best - George Thorogood & The Destroyers and The J Geils Band (both on the same bill at Slane in 1982). Sheryl Crow at all 5 UK shows in '99 (and in LA in '02)

Worst - Cooper Temple Clause (Dublin 2003). I almost threw myself in the Liffey half way through. It was the musical equivalent of getting your haemorrhoids removed. Without the anaesthetic. They were even worse than Bon Jovi were in Paris in '95. And that's quite a statement, coming from me. As cringeworthy as Bon Jovi are, at least their songs have tunes.

Most Underwhelming - The Black Crows' three opening sets at Wembley in '95. Wasn't familiar with their music, but based on what I'd been told, I really expected big things from them - but they were terrible and went down about as well as a fart in a spacesuit. One set ended early due to the rain and the roar from the bored crowd as they mercifully called a halt to the proceedings was their biggest cheer of the three nights.

Worst for me was Johnny Lang(OKC 99)- he had a good band but his guitar work was strictly "Lead Guitar 101" and those faces he makes are hard to take!
Best-Doug Kershaw ft Worth 78

Funny how that works............the BEPs for me are one of the best acts they've ever had open for them, along with Beck and Alice Cooper and Sheryl Crow.

The worst is a HUGE toss up for me though: Maroon 5, Goo Goo Dolls, Alanis Morrisset, Metric, the Charlatans, The Strokes, Kanye West...throw em in a hat and draw one.

The best: Toots & The Maytals in Copenhagen '07. The joint was rocking that night. And someone from The Stones entourage went on first and said: "Ladies and Gentlemen. Tonight, the greatest rock 'n roll band in the world. But first a performance by the first reggae band in the world". Keith later sang Toots his praises. And Ronnie's too. What i gig. The worst opening act I ever saw was The Seahorses in Copenhagen '98. Major snooze-fest.

Susan Tedeschi - not once but twice in Feb 2003. One or 2 blues songs is OK, but not 45 minutes in which every song has the exact same sound. painful, I was yearning for Bonnie Raitt even

Same happened in Cologne, great show by J.Geils Band, and Maffay got botteled.
Recently I read that he really suffered a certain time after mentally because of those incidents.
