Undercover - The Album
Posted by: Marhsall ()

I've been listening to Undercover again and I have to say every time I listen to it it get's better and better.

Many people use 'Some Girls' or 'Tattoo You' as the measuring stick of the "last great album"

But I think this was really their last classic.

And by far one of Charlies greatest moments.

Bill is great as well, and mixed perfect in the album.

And I'm going to say Ronnie is playing way better and more impressive than 'Some Girls' Probally Woody's best album.

She Was Hot is an amazing chug along rocker

Wanna Hold You one of Keef's best great playing by both axmen

And why 'Too Tough' & 'All The Way Down' have never been played lived is beyond me! These two songs just blow me away...

4 stars.. give me this over Voodoo, B2B, E.R. ABB, DW, ST, B'N'B, IORR, Anyday.. this has a raw energy that just grabs you by the throat... really underappreciated i.m.h.o

And we have gems like Feel On Baby and Tie You Up. The latter with one of Keith's best guitar solos ever. Brilliant!

Fantastic album!.The forgotten album,we should talk about it more

The problem with this album is the 80's guitar sound.
Second: the tracks are a bit too similar.
My faves are: Feel On Baby, Tie You Up, Wanna Hold You, Pretty Beat Up
Too Much Blood is too long, and a bit too far from The Rollong Stones' music tradition, and too close to disco.

Does anybody know what beatles song they were trying to capture w/ Wanna Hold You?

Kieth said something to the effect that they were trying to go after a certain beatles type song?

Undercover is one of my absolute favourite albums ever! It sounds pretty irrelevant to the other stones albums, but musically its kind of the best one!

was the first album i bought the day it came out. didn't eat school lunches for over a week so i could buy it without asking my parents because i knew they'd object because of nudity on the cover. which is pretty tame these days

Agreed - - the album is often unfairly overlooked and forgotten. Also is the only Stones album, I believe, that doesn't contain a single ballad. All are rockers!

I love this album also. Was the fist Stones album I bought when it came out.

I like the album a lot apart from "Too Much Blood" which Mick should have saved for his solo album. "Pretty Beat Up" is a good song, but it sounds like a demo save for David Sanborn's saxophone work. A more polished version would have helped tremendously.

Aw, Pretty Beat Up. Yeah, a bit demo-ish, but the guitars are in your face and Mick's fantastic vocals are breathtaking + THAT swing. Love it smileys with beer

it really is a grower. took me almost 30 years to love it as much as i do it by now. ;-)
and it was the last album the stones really mattered. and also the last succesfull attempt of sounding contemporary without loosing their roots and style.
VERY UNDERRATED album, it's a shame!

<and it was the last album the stones really mattered.>

I think people felt that the Stones mattered when SW came out, and when they hit the road again that year after the 6 year break...

By far their worst album for me!

Anybody notice how Keith recycles a riff from Soul Survivor for It Must Be Hell and later for Rock and a Hard Place?

Re: Undercover - The Album

My guess is that Mick recycled it for Rock And A Hard Place...

last great album while there creative juices were still flowing, and while they still worked as a complete five piece as far as being creative as a group and taking contributions from each other.

true, but even so, it was the first album that demonstrated that the glimmers' muse had departed....instead we get formulatic songs bereft of any orginality....

Really? Feel On Baby, the title track, Tie You Up, Wanna Hold You, Pretty Beat Up.

They all sounded like new, fresh stones tunes to me. They still do, in fact smiling smiley

It's an odd album......creative but very 80s sounding, lots of very listenable songs there but very far from their roots
