Rolling Stones Songs That Are The Most...Rolling Stones

I didn't want to say definitive. But then again, it's similar.

I guess tunes that really stick out to me, and I'm just going to name a few, not all of the ones, and do it by decades, that say to me, This is the sound of The Rolling Stones being The Rolling Stones, are:

Get Off My Cloud
The Last Time
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Street Fighting Man
Monkey Man

Brown Sugar
Bitch
Rocks Off
Tumbling Dice
Casino Boogie
All Down The Line
Soul Survivor
Dancing With Mr. D
If You Can't Rock Me
Dance Little Sister
Hand Of Fate
Hey Negrita
Crazy Mama
When The Whip Comes Down
Some Girls
Beast Of Burden

Summer Romance
She's So Cold
Hang Fire
She Was Hot
Tie You Up
All The Way Down
One Hit (To The Body)
Sad Sad Sad
Mixed Emotions

Highwire
Love Is Strong
Lowdown

Rough Justice
It Won't Take Long
Dangerous Beauty
She Saw Me Coming

That's a nice group of songs that sound like The Rolling Stones, that sound definitive of what The Rolling Stones sound like. The definitive Stones song? There's a few of 'em. More than one, And not just the 1960s.

Let's not overlook Respectable.

Does Respectable really sound like THE ROLLING STONES?

To me it doesn't. It sounds bland, boring - and sounds like a lot of fun for the guitar players. That's about it. There's nothing about the song that is worth it being a song you'd recommend to someone to listen to and say 'That's The Rolling Stones'. I'm still amazed that it even made the album.

for the most part i think any song that has at least 3 members of the band sound like rolling stones

but jagger's wired all night from the wandering spirit album sounds like it could of been a stones song as well as keith's take it so hard. i also think ronnie's buried alive could of been a stones song and belive that mick and keith actually perform on the track as well

Take It So Hard, without a doubt, is a Stones song the way it sounds. Amazing, innit? There are a few other Keith solo songs that are Stones all the way.

What happened to that kind of writing he was doing?

There's definently some solo tracks that deserve a mention here. It's always been a crying shame that Make No Mistake wasn't a Keith song on a Stones album I think. Would love to hear The Stones on it. Great thread by the way. The actual SOUND that epitomizes The Rolling Stones is rarely discussed on here. It always ends up with being a talk about the different guitarists' eras and then that always leads to bickering about who's best.

All the riffs like:
JJF
Satisfaction
Brown Sugar
Honky Tonk Woman
Street Fighting man
Start Me Up

They all got the sound that all, fans or not, will recognize with the Stones...

...but no one of those are thougher than Stray Cat Blues and Can`t You Hear Me Knocking. The last one with no typical Stones-sound, but I love it!

I echo that Stargroves - Tumbling Dice for me too. It ain't my fave Stones song but it captures the essence of the band the best with that irresistable chugging rhythm, unforgettable guitar intro and then the solo that immediately stamps Keith's authority on it, the soulful rock groove, gospelly background singing, drop down middle eight, and a rousing outro. It's relentless and is extremely catchy and uplifting.

Of Skipstone's 'original' list:

I don't think "One Hit" does sound like The Stones at all. It sounds like a typical 80's stadion rock band. No swing. Just skip the side and take "Dirty Work" instead...

...many great examples above...esp. Tumbling Dice..and that opening riff....always think of Keith using one hand.....and especially of the epic 75/76 tour...but I also love what they did to a classic like Just My Imagination....they re made it into a Stones tune....and live esp in 78/81 it was amazing.

I included One Hit because of the rest of the babies - Love Is Strong, Lowdown, Dangerous Beauty, that are in that same riffage/vein. It is A good song on Dirty Work and it's got Stones all in it. Maybe not definitive by Stones standards but for the era...

Glad this is of interest to some people. A Stones thread - who'd've thunk.
