songs usually take me back to the first time i heard them...
in this case.....cruising around with my high school buds in the late '70s.

studio version is superb.

a "period piece" - hasn't really stood the test of time, though

Its a great Rock n Roll tune
Great use of the phase 90, really well thought out lyrics and singing style....intoxicating title and the bass and drum interplay could power a ship across any ocean.

Absolutely fabulous tune that never gets old.

Ever

Love it on Some Girls but don't care for it too much live these days. The version on Shine A Light lacks balls and the power that hits you on the original.

Absolutely

I haven't actually performed a test of time but it would probably stand it.

For me i like the song a lot. The version on SAL sucks but this one just has a hypnotic kind of feel to it. Very entertaining and rocking

Bar the vocals that was a fantastic performance. Thanks for posting.
And Bill manages to improve Keith's original wonderful bass-line, by giving it his special swing signature.

shattered along with miss you were my first introduction to the stones and it was love at first exposure - age 11...i had just discovered rock and roll a year early (dared to change mom's radio channel and found eric clapton "lay down sally").

i gotta say, shattered at radio city music hall was the best. the beacons were great too. maybe you just gotta see it live in a smaller manhattan venue.

what do you feel when you hear this song?
made me think of all the friends I've losted through the years,
and sometimes I'm sad to see me as the only one aliving of my generation in my town and around.

Err..do you mean you are VERY old ? Or are all your friends junkies ??

Have always maintained that the 1994 live version was the best ever. The 1981 version is awful yet hilarious. The Bang tour version is missing the guitar from Ronnie during the break but overall it's not too bad. The version on SAL is much better than the version on Still Life if that makes any sense.

The song itself is one of their best known tunes and it's one of my favourite Stones songs ever. Great tune, a lot going on in it, it's as New York a song as one could get and I think it's fookin' great.

Remember Mick's lyrics at the Superdome?

To live in this dump, you must be tough, though.....

i was at radio city and the beacon .radio city rules .the stones should have used radio city for sal .they were on fire at radio city.do you remember worried about you when they brought the keyboard for mick to play .very cool moment when mick tickled the ivories and sang his high falsetto .this was one rocking and rolling stones show .

One other interesting fact from VL tour is that the N.O. concert was broadcasted (radio) live throughout country. Sound Quality was questionable despite an enthused audience. I believe it was a Friday night.

One of their best ever studio creations that they rarely did justice to live. The main reason is they never got that exact guitar "sound" which was so amazing. Then you add Jagger's fantastic snide vocals and lyrics.

People dressed in plastic bags
Directing traffic
Some kind of fashion

The studio version is absolutely superb!!
Possibly the best track on the generally overrated Some Girls album...
Miss You, Some Girls itself, Before They Make Me Run and Beast Of Burden are the other stand-out tracks.
The rest are mostly made up of sound/attitude (which is not enough to make a great song).
I know many disagree, but they´re wrong...winking smiley

(I'm no American but I am sure I have read it) In the aftermath of 9/11 many people were interviewed and wrote about their feelings and so on and I remember someone's memo that went like this:
I was the dj on a wedding in NYC and it was 9/11 and of course nobody wanted to dance. They were just drinking and talking and that poor couple etc.
- After a while the dj must have been drunk enough too as he put on Shattered and immediately some guests started to laugh and (more and more) and they got up from their seats and started to dance and sing.

song don't particularly bother me...i was born nyc...i like the references and the tude and rhythm...good one...NOT in my personal top ten or twenty stones tracks...(or thirty)...but i dig it...when it comes on the radio i change back to country station. that's just me tho...it's a cool vamp...theatrical and stuff...not really what i go to the stones for personally....
