Great, Thank you Little Queenie.

"the more complicated the format of the album... the more @#$%& up the reproduction and
agonising the delays."

Hahaha, and Mr. Warhol comes up with a zipper!
Mr. Steckler was not the only one Andy took little notice of.

Fantastic!! thank you so much for posting. You can just hear Mick's voice from that era dictating that letter. Fascinating!

So, Warhol supposed to contribute to THROUGH THE PAST, DARKLY album originally; then it was re-scheduled to LET IT BLEED (that was called STICKY FINGERS at the time), but finally realized in STICKY FINGERS...

Starting from THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIC REQUEST The Stones seemingly wasted a lot of energy - and money! - into sleeve art...

The story of this letter regards Through the Past Darkly. Warhol accepted the task but then Klein failed to send him material and although Jagger complained with Klein for this inefficiency, Klein didn't reply.
As a result, the project with Warhol was postponed or parked and the Stones decided to arrange the session in UK and manage directly themselves.
Ethan Russel was contacted for the photo session which took place exactly one month after this letter, May 21st at the St.Katherine's dock.

Mick's secretary obviously did not have spell-check .
Whatever in this case is one word .

"...and please write back saying how much money you would like"

quite the negotiator..huh?

i know they were friends and all...but you'd think Mick would set some
sort of boundary.

i look forward to the day when Mick (& Stones) tour and they
leave it to us to determine the ticket price. winking smiley

I do not think Mick really got serious about the financial aspect of the business until after '69 or so.
Bill talks a lot about the money mess the Stones had in his book.

Is it known for sure whether Warhol in fact was ever paid? And does anyone know how much?

It's surprising how many of these projects, done for the famous by the famous, end up happening for free.

... as straycat58 noted above: this letter is about Through the Past Darkly.
see in the letter where Mick wrote "our new hits album"? that's Through the Past Darkly.
the plan for Warhol to do the cover for it fell through. so we really don't have to wonder whether he was paid for it

...this is a great and prescient letter. I mean Jagger had his eye on the "branding" ball as easrly as '69. Impressive.
