Greatest change is musical styles between two consecutive Stones albums.

One of the reasons that The Stones are so great is that every album has it's own feel, style, mood, texture, production etc.... Their songs are not interchangable with each album. If someone heard Can't You Hear me Knocking for the first time and you ask them what album it's from by playing maybe 5 Stones albums (and of course not playing CYHMK from SF)you know they wouldn't pick Some Girls or Out Of Our Heads (well at least I hope not!). So what two consecutive albums have the greatest musical style difference?

1) Satanic Majesties to Beggars Banquet

2) Black and Blue to Some Girls

your picks?

Easily Sticky Fingers!

Satanic to Banquet. Actually IMO, it is not so much Satanic to BB, but everything before to Banquet. A Quantum Leap.

Aftermath to Satanic Majesties, and then an even bigger change to Beggars, those are the most dramatic in my opinion.

To me, Some Girls in '78 was a massive change from the preceding three albums ... Goats Head Soup '73, IORR '74, Black n' Blue '76

Aftermath and Satanic Majesties weren't released in consecutive order.

Quite right tatters, I always forget Between The Buttons.

So a correction,
Between The Buttons to Satanic Majesties and then Beggars.

To be perfectly honest I don't play any of those 3 albums much ,so had to look up the exact dates, for years I didn't even have Between The Buttons in my collection,I bought the 2002 remaster a couple of years ago , first time I ever owned it on CD, bought it on vinyl in Malta in 1990, that was the first time I owned it for 20 years, not sure if I still have that copy anymore.

Black And Blue to Some Girls - gigantic difference sonically and in musicianship

Dirty Work to Steel Wheels - From nasty filthy to tight, clean and polished

Their Satanic Majesties Request to Beggars Banquet - Tripped and wigged to, well, real rock'n'roll

Tattoo You to Undercover - This might not count since TY is such a work of scraps and U is almost a brand new album song wise but production and sound wise they are quite different.

yeah - i'd lean toward this, too. it's not specifically a style variance as much as a dramatic falloff of songwriting...and the production values, etc are also a major departure....

on pure musical "style" points - i'd prolly cite black & blue > some girls. funk to punk.

I'd say :IORR /Black & Blue.

On the musical evolution between albums, Keith said, "There is a change between material on Satanic Majesties and Beggars Banquet.

Nice thread indeed More Hot Rocks !smileys with beer

Out Of Our Heads to Aftermath.

Out Of Our Heads - pure Chess flavoured Chicago r'n'b with many covers to Aftermath which is all self written, pop orientated, quite dark and featuring Brian at his eclectic best.

Lots of possibilities, the first 2 that came to mind have gotten many votes...

TSMR --> BB
B&B --> SG

In both instances a somewhat experimental/one off album is followed by a complete change in sound that completely worked. Both albums in my Top 5.

So, is it the SOUND or is it the SONGWRITING? I figured it was about the sound, hence production, mixing, etc...which brings a or a big change from album to album.

Let It Bleed to Sticky Fingers.

The pace quickened, more quick paino and brass blowing. A totally different sound for them... or anybody. Nothing anywhere sounded like Sticky Fingers before Sticky Fingers.
