Best versions? Beatles or Stones?
Posted by: Thommie ()

Like many others I start with an apologize if this has been discussed before:

1) Are "Money" and "I wanna be your man" the only two songs that have been released by both the Beatles and the Stones? (If we're talking about official studio recordings). IMO the Stones versions are superior to the Beatles',

2) Both versions of I wanna be your man were released 1963. Do you know if any of the groups had the chance to hear the other group's version before recording their own?

By the way: This is my post no 1000!smileys with beer

Beatles "Money" kills the Stones.

IWBYM - Stones by a fkn mile. The Stones had released their single before the Beatles had recorded theirs if I'm not mistakedn

Money is the most covered song I own...I have it on probably 50 records with different bands...always the 50ies artists that doin it best, but I think The Beatles version is better than Stones, and all because of Lennons singing...raw and precise...Ringo's singing on Lennon/McCartney-song I wanna be your man is not hard to beat for Stones/Jagger...Stones is better..was the second single I bought from Stones btw...

As far as I'm aware, The Beatles gave 'I Wanna Be Your Man' to the Stones. The Stones-take was recorded prior to that of the Beatles, so they would have heard it before letting Ringo have a bash. The Stones rendition is a sublime slab of frantic slide guitar and its raw and exciting. I do, however, enjoy the Beatles remake, with a more country-and-western feel to it.

'Money'? The Beatles, hands-down.

I Wanna Be Your Man was written for the Stones and they had success with it so the Beatles did their own take. Stones on I Wanna Be Your Man but I like the Beatles Money better than the Stones

what about the BBC stuff? with both BBC catalogues they have about 10 more overlapping songs. Namely Carol (which the Stones kill the Beatles on).

Paul does "Twenty Flight Rock" and "Crackin' Up" on the live album Tripping The Live Fantastic. Nice version, not good as Stones.

Macca does the best version of I Wanna Be Your Man on Paul is Live, sound check. It is fantastic Bo Diddly beat. The Beatles Money is tops! Lennon does shred it, and it just sounds wicked. Stones lost the edge on Money.

The best version of Money was made by Jerry Lee Lewis, in his "Live at the Star Club", IMO.

down the road apiece (also done in '81) isn't a berry cover....but the stones copped their version after his, obviously. so, if yer gonna include that, might as well include Route 66, which has a similar lineage....

Didn't Paul also do "She Said Yeah"? And the Plastic Ono Band did "Money" (I prefer that one to the Beatles).

And I think Lennon did "You Can't Catch Me" on ROCK'N ROLL.

Plastic Ono Band version on Live Peace Toronto is fantastic! Very heavy. Macca did do She Said Yeah on Run Devil Run, and it is pretty darn good. Also, great versions of Dizzy Mrs Lizzy and Blue Sued Shoes on Live Peace in Toronto. Very gritty!

I remember reading that Jimi Hendrix was on a releaseparty for Sgt.pepper, and day after that on his own concert played Sgt pepper lonely heart clubs band live before this album were released...Those were the days with real artists...with some musically talents.. Brian Jones were one of those...seems often to be forgotten here...
