Anyone else think the sound of the RIO gig is dreadful???
The rhythm section is almost inaudible, sounds totally unmixed and makes the band seem very shoddy indeed when this was a pretty decent gig in my opinion.

I'm not sure showing this immediately after Stones in Exile was a great idea to be honest.

The doc was much better at full length than the cut version on Fallon. The superb footage of Keith and Mick playing that acoustic blues was new to me.I think there should have been a touch more live footage, maybe All Down The Line from Ladies and Gents just to push home just how great they were on that tour. But overall, tremendous doc,all this Exile fan could ever want

I do agree that it seems a completely different mix to the version I have, and "Sympathy" in particular I thought sounded tired. I wasn't there, so I may be wrong, but that's how it sounded on TV in my opinion.

Anyone notice Leavell videoing on his camcorder on the band introduction? I've seen it several times and never noticed that.

Hmm kinda disappointed in the documentary. The re-enactment/fake footage ruins things like this and there was quite a lot of it. thumbs down

Nice to see more of the 1970 Olympic Studios pics of them recording, better if they were in a book though. grinning smiley

Regarding Rio, I could hardly hear the bass on my tv... Strange gig. confused smiley

wasn't the Rio show webcast as it was happening? i vaguely recall getting up at 2 AM to catch ... something
maybe that's what they broadcast instead of the Biggest Bang mix?

The words on pieces of paper re-enactment of Casino Boogie almost settles the argument about the "kissing c*nt in Cannes" line as that is what is written on the flash card.

I say almost because that's what the line is deemed to be now. In '71, who knows?

Great documentary. The sound on recent tour live gigs never seems to come over well on TV. I guess you had to be there to get the full effect. Would have been better to put together a compilation of live versions of Exile tracks to keep the theme going.

Also noticed that they showed a live clip of Mick singing along to Rocks Off so maybe that will be on the Ladies and Gentleman DVD somewhere

Those added 'old b&w' bits to the documentary were a bit shit werent they ?

Surely they must have had enough real footage to cobble those together from

Really looking forward to the full length version though

Also agree that the Rio gig was bad. But we knew that already

Me too. There seemed to be quite a bit of live footage both black and white that i didn't recognise so hopefully some of that might make its way on there

I really enjoyed the documentary and I'm looking forwards to the DVD. There are so many Exile myths that I'm still not sure

How much time Mick J actually spent at Nellcote? How many tracks did they record at Nellcote that dodn't need a lot of finishing off?

I thought some of the montages for the individual tracks were quite interesting. Shine a Light, for eg, put together in a way that hinted the song was about Keith, which has always been my theory, rather than Brian.

It got better for me after the intro because a band sanctioned project shouldn't mis-date the 69 press conference and show 69 concert footage as 71.

Yes - The song SFTD is built on a great funky bassline but on this recording the rhythm section seemed to be playing somewhere outside the stadium.

Let's ignore the mistakes. Later on in the documentary we hear the studio version of Happy dubbed onto live video of the song..doesn't matter really, it's the overall feel that matters and the story that is being told. The faked bits are fine, obviously they had to fill in the gaps somehow and I think they did it quite well. There wasn't footage of everything, for example the backing singers in LA - they had to fake this bit so as to follow Mick talking about this. They needed to maintain the flow of the narrative.

Overall it is a great film with the right feel to it. I'm looking forward to buying the full length DVD version, which will no doubt have some interesting bonus features.

One thing though - I wish they could have revisited Nellcote, beyond filming the front gate. Perhaps they tried but couldn't persuade the current owner to let them in...

I didn't mind the fake backing singer scene, it's the parts where they fake the band, now we know which Stone played the Danelectro... none of them hah!

Micks reactions in Olympic were interesting, why did they bother going?

I'll buy the DVD. smiling smiley

...I guess the issue here is:
the recent BROADCAST OF the Rio gig on BBC 1 last week (May 23), following the"Exile" docu, was bad- a bad idea, ànd poor sound quality (strange mix, etc.)...
I never heard anybody say here the gíg was bad!!??
I only have the "Biggest Bang" DVD to go on, but I personaly think this was a GREAT ig.

Ok I guess the Danelectro shouldn't have been in the there if they never actually played one! I have to admit to being fooled by some of the fake footage a couple of times - sometimes it was slipped in between the real stuff, so you wouldn't know which was which...at other times it was more obvious.

It seems Mick was a bit embarrassed about visiting the the studios when he must have thought it was a bit silly to go but nevertheless had been persuaded to do so. Olympic at the beginnning and Sunset at the end provide neat bookends to the film so must have been integral to the plan of the film.

I thought RW was on form at Rio..some nice guitar parts and soloing. The bass was audible on my headphones, I guess it's what system you listened to it through. I noticed RW was loud in the mix but KR was quieter - some might say this was a good thing!

In my TV guide (VPRO gids) "Stones in Exile" is scheduled on BBC2 tonight, 23:10 (dutch time) until 0:45.
That's 1 hr. and 35 minutes, let's say 1,5 hr.
The dutch broadcast, earlier this month, was only 1 hr.
Will this be the complete DVD whichs will be released later?
