So after hearing Don Was say that So Divine is a combination of new and all vocals (and tactically 'forgetting' which ones are new, in this interview [
www.npr.org]), I listened to the song with new ears. It’s funny how upon hearing the opening verses you automatically assume all vocals are new, but now I'm convinced the choruses are sung by the young Mick, at Stargroves in 1970. They have a sixties, almost Between The Buttonish sound to them. I put them in bold face.
Thanks to twenny revlights and Rocky Dijon for figuring out the lyrics (some small adjustments made).
You think you got me in your chains
Control me with your devious plans
You think your love is so divine
You pour it out like it was heaven-scented wine
You think your love is all I crave
Well I got better things to do than be your slave
When you first asked me in
I heard those violins
You quickly pulled the pin
You had no hesitationThere is a rose that bears your name
The bloom's short-lived, its such a shame
You think your love is so divine
You think I'll drink it like it was heaven-scented wine
You think your love is all I crave
You say I'll worship you till I'm in my grave
So when love passed the ball
You play winner takes it all
Act like its a carnival
Some mad conflagration
I’m like a two-way street
You live to lolly-g
I'm voting with my feet
Who needs this aggravation?
I'm headed for the door
Never see you anymore
I'll be on some distant shore
Way out of circulation
No tears will pass my eye
No memory will make me cry
So long, adios, goodbye
I'm off your reservationAaah, yeah..
You think your love is so divine
Think you're the savior of mankind
You say your love is like love potion number nine
You say your love is all I crave
And I'm the dog whose had its day
So sad to rain on your parade
But I got better things to do than be your slave
