Newbie Question Re. Stones Non-Album Tracks
Posted by: OhNoNotMeAgain ()
Date: May 17, 2009 15:27

Hi all,

I'm new to this great board as a registered member, but have been "lurking" for a while. I wondered if you guys could help me out with info on the Stones' non-album studio and live tracks on CD from "Steel Wheels" onwards; what they are and where to find them. With studio tracks I refer to actual outtakes, not remixes. I would like to collect this material, although I'm not really a Stones collector, so it would be cool to know what are the most common/affordable releases for a "casual" fan who does not plan to invest hundreds of bucks in, say, a Dutch 3" CD single. I already learned a lot about the "Flashpoint" non-album B-sides from the great "Flashpoint & Collectables" thread, but what else is out there - from "Stripped", for example, or "No Security", and the post-"Steel Wheels" studio albums? Your expertise would be much appreciated. Thanks a lot!

(P.S.: I noticed that there seem to be quite a few Springsteen fans on this board. I'm into Bruce big time, collecting his stuff pretty much the same way many of you collect the Stones, and even run a collector's website)

Thanks, Amused, but I was thinking more of the actual official CD releases (singles/EP's). Also, some of the boots you listed sound a lot like alternate mixes/remixes which I am trying to steer clear of, as I don't really care for that kind of stuff. Anyway, I appreciate your reply - and thanks for the welcome. I like it, like it, yes I do! ;-)

Regarding your preferences you should start with Stripped Companion, which offers you great acoustic versions of Honest I Do, Memory Motel, No Expectations, etc., and much much more. Also some officially released b-sides from Voodoo Lounge singles, like The Storm, Jump On Top Of Me, etc. An absolute MUST!

Thanks! And the acoustic versions you mentioned are actual official "B-sides" from "Stripped" in official sound quality, yes?

Thanks, UrbanSteel.

I just looked up the track listing for the "Stripped Companion" boot on the net, and the description said that "all the individual live tracks have been edited together to one uninterrupted live block". That's not what I'm looking for, as the plan is to eventually compile all these tracks onto a few CDR's in roughly chronological order (only for private use, of course), so they should be separated. I have a similar compilation of Mark Knopfler B-sides on an original, factory-pressed boot called "Guitar Dreams" (which is awesome), and already assembled a "private" multi-CDR collection of Springsteen's non-album stuff myself as well.

actually I think you might miss the point with Stripped Companion... it's got 4 (uhm, separated and not edited) Voodoo Lounge b-sides.
and the live disc is, quality- and setlist-wise, just another Stripped disc. (hence the title).

The studio B-sides are cool, just what I need, but the live tracks seem to be edited into each other. However, your advice is much appreciated.

welcome to IORR :-)

The 'monitor mixes' that were made available in summer 2006 and subsequently bootlegged are different and certainly better than the 'Training Wheels' material.

But these "monitor mixes" are not officially released material, are they?

Find the (CD) singles:
Love Is Strong's The Storm
You Got Me Rocking's Jump On Top Of Me
Out Of Tears' I'm Gonna Drive and So Young
I Go Wild's, uh, fuller mix - not one of those silly disco mixes, of I Go Wild
Like A Rolling Stone's All Down The Line and Black Limo
Wild Horses' Live With Me, Gimme Shelter and Tumbling Dice
Saint Of Me's Anyway You Look At It

That's it I think, post-Steel Wheels/Flashpoint.

There is earlier stuff on Rarities (IORR's Through The Lonely Nights and Mixed Emotion's Fancy Man Blues) as well as Sucking In The Seventies' Shattered B-side Everything Is Turning To Gold plus some LP track single B-side edits as well as single edits (Beast Of Burden, Fool To Cry, Crazy Mama).

Collectibles has Cook Cook Blues, which was the awful Rock And A Hard Place's B-side. It was recorded for Undercover...

Much appreciated, skipstone.

About the studio B-sides, how would you rate these? I don't know a single one of them (yet). But I love the title of "Jump On Top Of Me"...should be a great song, no? ;-)

Jump on top of me it's a great song and the stones played it live in 99, a shame that doesn't get in Voodoo Lounge...

Here´s a good one if you´re starting out with Steel Wheels:

Actually, I´m looking for an original silver pressing of the above, so if you happen to have an extra...

Dont forget...

USA singles:

Street Fighting Man, alternate version
Wild Horses (Sway, Aleternate Version)
Happy (All Down the Line alternate version)
Promo Only Before the Make Me Run, alternate version...

BUT, you must get the VERY EARLY pressings to get these, quickly changed to regular versions.

And, You dont even want to go to the promo and demo 7"s...It nearly drove me bonkers...

BTW, I really love all those collectors' exchanges going on on this board. That's what I miss in Springsteen forums (sorry to bring him up again here) - looks to me like among, say, 50,000 Bruce fans, only 3 or so are serious collectors.
