Stones week, night 1
Posted by: tumblingdice ()

My recorder didn't record the first showing, so I checked on here and was surprised to see nothing posted yet...Lucky for me, I get the East coast and West coast feeds so I'm now watching it on the West coast feed.
Kicked off with Green Day doing rip this joint. Honestly I liked it. Of course it's not as good as the Stones, but it was good to see it played and played well. Also nice to see the sax played also. Fast, kicking and good guitars.
Will update more as the show goes on.

Taj Mahal will be singing Shine A Light later in the show...
Tomorrow Keith Urban will sing Tumbling Dice
Wednesday Sheryl Crow does all down the line
Thursday Phish will do Loving Cup

of course, this is just my opinion ... but 2 thumbs up on them both.

the 'lick this for $10' game they did during the show (Stones edition, of course) was a real hoot also winking smiley

"Doctor please, some more men please,
To Cotchford Farm, out by the pool...

What a drag it is they couldn't revive him"

Yes indeed the Lick This for $10 was fun to watch.
1 person had to lick an Exile album fast enough to get it to play a bit...next was someone putting on a Stones logo mask with a hole to stick his tongue out, and lick a red color substance onto a large Exile album cover with the word Exile left uncolored, thus completing it.
And lastly a man and woman licked a large fuzzy dice ( one for each) down a tongue logo set of stairs and the largest number rolled on the dice was the winner.
Then each lick shown in slo motion was great!

Taj Mahal's cover of Shine A Light was a great bluesy tribute though....

I like a lot of GD's stuff, but this was a big bowl of meh. I knew the guest spots would be anti-climatic, but still ...

The vocals were far too stilted, and the other guitarist (who is that guy? isn't GD a trio?) and sax player did most of the actual Stonesy RTJ work.

Exile has no truly pop song that GD could attack. They could have reworked something to suit their strengths -- Turd might have been a good choice -- but it wouldn't have sounded like Exile -- and maybe that was a concern, that the songs remain reasonably faithful to the album.

I guess I'll just check video clips for the rest -- and tune in on Friday.

Watching green day cover this song I have to think that Rock and Roll just ain't what it used to be. This is awful stuff. The only group that can play this song is the band that wrote it. Just as someone said about a Willie Mays drive long ago, "the only guy that could catch it, hit it."spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

I thought GD was excellent, but it was more of a punk attack, so I understand the view that there was less 'roll'.
Didn't make it less good....prefer to have them do it their way, than try to sound like the stones.
Taj Mahal was excellent!

Taj Mahal was excellent!

of course it is a matter of tastes JKF and i respect yours
to me GD (and other similar bands) are the example of how rock and roll can be emptied and turned into a glossy product with a nice "alternative" label on it. Punk? IMHO that is punk for OC or other Hollywood tv serials "rebel" teenagers
the first step to this "normalization" is to cut the roll
in that, this version of rip this joint is a perfect example

taj mahal intro on acoustic was not remarkable
roots, that's a band that rolls

...i think this is a new low for the board.... The Stones receiving a ton of props....in some cases major bands doing covers on a national TV show and peeps are criticising the performances....i don't see how any of this can be bad.

"peeps"? i've been a memeber of this board for 5 years now, not exactly peeping here

a new low? maybe the fact that in a stones board not only one cannot criticize the band but not even the bands covering them... eye popping smiley

Did not like GD at all. Punk , my ass.
And that bass player...well I realize he don't know how to walk, but could he have crawled maybe? Just ONE extra note besides the rootnote to swing it just a bit?
