Brown Sugar Cover Version

Until now, I've never heard a cover version of Brown Sugar, when tonight on Little Steven's Underground Garage radio program, he played a version by Little Richard. What a surprize! Any other obscure Stones covers I might have missed?

I have a few cd's of other's doing Stones songs...some quite enjoyable. Ike and Tina Turner doing Under My Thumb comes to mind. Another guy (can't remember who at the moment) doing a slower version of Dead Flowers I also likes as well.

Hey Rockman Wino here in Melb - did you ever hear Skyhooks do Brown Sugar - a pretty good version which I think is on the Skyhooks live album of around 1978 called Live be in it?

I have, massive Skyhooks fan I am. It's on Live! Be In It, that's right. It's a good version; they definetly put their own spin on it.

The best cover version I have heard is by a tribute band called "The Glimmer Twins" who try to imitate the Stones in 72. Their version of BS comes very near to sounding just like the real 72 versions.

Kait, no that wasn't the one I was thinking of. I'll have to dig out the old cd and find who did the one I was thinking of.

yeah that litte richard cut is great!!! i know it. it was circa '70.. he had just cut an album called "king of rock and roll" he was in amazing voice and spirit all through that album. i think he had a new deal with Reprise records at the time...and was really working hard and mighty...

"freedom blues" was the single and he performed it on johnny carson show. it MIGHT have been the same night that richard and don rickles got in a hilarious pseudo=argument in some primtive language...

the title cut is all:

"...ike and tina turner got an earthquake sound but i'm the man from Macon and i'm gonna shut 'em down Elvis presley have u heard the news gonna walk all over your blue suede shoes cause I"M THE KING OF ROCK AND ROLL...."

hah.. and on and on...
and, you know...he sorta was...

on brown sugar it seems richard sung every note in the universe before he even started verse one line one... operatic or something.. beyond human; he was THE cat and he didn't mind lettin' you know....hawww. Richard!!! xo

he went from ultra low to ultra high into falsetto and beyond before singing line one of the song....man, he was stepping up to the plate... in his mid thirties...he had changed the world fifteen years previous and didn't mind telling you and showing you...how it went. it's awesome stones cover....awesome..bet it blew the glimz minds....mick really went for richard back in the day...according to mick himself....

found some snips. originally released '71 it says...

Looks like it was Steve Earle and The Dukes

Steve Earle does a semi-inspired cover of "Take It Or Leave It'.
Also "Before They Make Me Run", "Dead Flowers" and "Sweet Virginia" are some that I have.

Rod Stewart does a reasonable version of Street Fighting Man on his
first solo album, The Faces also covered Love In Vain Live early in their career.
