Coming Dwon Again - Charlie's MOST unique drumming
Posted by: Marhsall ()

The Drumming on this track is so unique and unlike Charlie ... I sometimes doubt it is even him, considering that nothing else he's ever down sounds like this!

Is It possible that it's Jimmy Miller?

It is similar to S.A.L. that's why I thought it might be Jimmy M.

Charlie's playing is very tasteful on this. Love the simple, off-beat fills. I can understand the thought that it might be JMiller, but it does sound like CW to me. He was still really on his game back then, I think.

That is actually a pretty smart ear. The style is very close to JM's drumming in "Shine a Light"; and very unlike Charlie. Had never paid attention to it; it's in the way he is hitting the Hi hat in the stutter before the snare. But later on I do believe it sounds like CW again. I don't know how valid this is, but Keith has said that around GHS Jimmy was largely out of the picture. Does that mean he wouldn't be in the mix enough to pick up the stix if he chose? Don't know.
Marshall, from your posts lately, it sounds like you have been on kind of a deep-sea Stones journey.smoking smiley

It's gotta be Charlie. He's big on throwing those high hats opening and closing into the middle of fills. Not many rock drummers do that. Jimmy Miller couldn't have done it like that.

To me, - Charlie was generally at the top of his work from 68/69 -73/74.
I loved his drumming on YaYa's and most of the stuff he did in that time.

It's back when Charlie was able to do different styles of drumming and not the very syncopated same thing he does nowadays. His current style seems to have had a solid start with Some Girls. Even on Black And Blue he had some very different styles going on.

Somewhere he simplified things.

But yeah, great song with fantastic guitars and great drumming, Coming Down Again. I think this just shows that Goats Head Soup is still a somewhat under appreciated album (as a whole).

It is, and more than "somewhat". Goats Head Soup is a great album with a great overall feel of melancholy and nostalgia.

I always liked that song: - Coming down again.
Charlies drumming was very nice and tasty.

And I always felt that CDA - from the drumming - was the dear cousin of Angie!

Thanks for this post. I honestly had never consciously noticed the drumming. The percussion, yes, but not the brilliant (whoever it is) drumming.

the wiki for GHS has some interesting facts about the recording of the album:

Coming Down Again is gem, in addition to Charlie, everyone's at the top of their game-Nicky's piano, Bobby Keys sax breaks and Mick's backing vox really shine on it too.

so f*** it, why not give it a listen then!

Same with me!
These days I don't like his drumming so much anymore. Particularly his live/Stones drumming! But I liked his studio drumming from the 70' better too!

Seems he's enjoying his Jazztours much more and is bored with the Stones stuff now.

At least from his drumming on the last tours I got this impression.
It's often somewhat better at smaller (club)gigs like in 95 or 2002.
But in stadiums and arenas it got somehow uninspired.
