solomon burke is still around and doing some good albums, too....he was never in otis' or sam's class, but a good second-tier singer....

There's a singer from the UK named Jamie Lidell. He has the most soul from a white guy I've ever heard. Seriously. video: [www.dailymotion.com]

There aint no good soul singers left.. Perhaps Joe Cocker, in that case.

One of my all-time favorite albums is "Otis Redding Live in Europe". Give it a listen. It is not just his incredible voice that captures you, but the sheer excitement he generated. The atmosphere in the arena is similar to that of an early Stones concert, it is electric.

good call, dave - to which i would only add, if you liked otis in europe, you'll love him at monterey!

Little Richard!

There wouldn't have even been an Otis Redding without his influence (& check out some of Richard's 60s Vee-Jay & Modern recordings for proof of his soul credentials, particularly 'I Don't Know What You've Got' which features a young Jimi Hendrix on guitar).

Whilst I love the 'Live in Europe' album, I'm not so keen on his Monterey performance. Already he seemed to be parodying himself slightly, & the fast numbers are done a little TOO fast (just like James Brown did later).

I really think Van Morrison is most underrated singer on wheels...

i try to keep current on soul music - and there's been some good new stuff happening in that "space" in recent years, but i haven't heard anyone i would characterize as "great," frankly....

you'll be hard-pressed to find a bigger van fan than yours truly - but i don't think he's underrated at all....

It all depends how you define a "soul singer" of course. Keith isn't a great singer by any means, but he sure has alot of soul, much more than these reality TV Aretha Franklin-wannabees...

Otis Redding is my favorite singer (period). But I'd have to say that Donny Hathaway or Curtis Mayfield were the last great soul singers. That is of course, if you ignore Sharon Jones. Amy Winehouse ain't bad either.
