Time Is On My Side

Heard this classic on the radio today - WOW!

That great opening guitar, Mick's vocal, sneer, and attitude, the lead break - in other words, all the good bad stuff we love about the Stones.

Don't forget it.

l love the version they do of "Time is on my side" from Hampton's Road .Keith backing vocals all ragged and rough are just great. Great song.

Here are the lyrics, and the music is fantastic:

You can't depend on anything really
There's no promises there's no point
There's no good there's no bad
In this dirty little joint
No dope smoking no beer sold after 12 o'clock
Rosedale Mississippi Magic City Juke Joint
Mr Johnson sings over in a corner by the bar
Sold his soul to the devil so he can play guitar
Too cool to be forgotten
Hey hey too cool to be for gotten
Man running thru the grass outside
Says he wants to take up serpents
Says he will drink the deadly thing
And it will not hurt him
House rule no exceptions
No bad language no gambling no fighting
Sorry no credit don't ask
Bathroom wall reads is God the answer YES
Too cool to be forgotten
Hey hey too cool to be forgotten
June bug vs hurricane
June bug vs hurricane
Hey hey

I had a lover
I thought he was mine
Thought I'd always be his valentine
Leaning agianst the railing of a Lake Charles bridge
Overlooking the river leaning over the edge
He asked me baby would you jump into the water with me
I told him no way baby that's your own death you see
Too cool to be forgotten
Hey hey too cool to be forgotten
June bug vs hurricane
June bug vs hurricane
Hey hey

"No dope smoking no beer sold after 12 o'clock"

this is one of the first stones songs I really got into. I think the best part is the bridge. The organ, lead guitar and singing are so good.

I wonder why my 1972 LONDON Hot Rocks LP has the guitar intro and the later Remstered ABKCO LP has the organ intro? I know according to official sources the organ version was the single release in the US but( I listened to top 40 radio all the time as a 8 yr old) the guitar version is the one I clearly remember.Strange.

I especially love the 'Got Live' version of Time is on My Side. That must have been an incredible one to actually see and hear in person. R-a-w e-n-e-r-g-y.

Yeah, what's up with the guitar intro vs. the organ intro? - the lead is sooooo cool.

My Big Hits has the organ, although most other versions have the guitar.

BTW, great album name - "Sounds from my Big Organ"

Good call, Elmo. A pure groove from first tune to fade out.

The organ intro is hard to hear, especially in a car. The guitar intro is more of an attention grabber. And there is no doubt as to why the backing vocals were re-done. Cheers

The organ version was recorded in London and released in the States as a single.

The guitar version was recorded at Chess and released on The Rolling Stones No 2 in the UK.

There was a mix-up with the first editions of the Stones Decca catolouge. It was corrected for the 2002 remasters.

I don't personally care for the organ version at all

"In America we were basically known for heavy, slowish kind of ballads. Time Is On My Side, Tell Me, Heart of Stone, that was what we were known for. Strangely enough that was our thing. Every single was a slow song. Who would believe it? You'd think they'd be clamoring for out-and-out rock and roll, but no, it was the @#$%&' soul ballads that happened for us in America."

- Keith Richards, c. 1979

The Winos: Time Is On My Side

Ringo beat me to it - but the Winos version is powerful. Keith's golden touch.

I saw the Winos in 88'. Great show. I have not heard these in a while. Thanks for the post!
