A friend of mine (Metallica fan) put together a Metallica CD for me because I've never really listened to them and I'm going to see them next friday.
Anyway, while listening to the CD in the car, I have my finger on the "skip" button. Not really my cup of tea.

Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich commented on opening for THE ROLLING STONES:

"Yeah, it was last year — it was about a year and a half ago out here in San Francisco. We were in the middle of some chill time after the 'St. Anger' tour and one day it was like, 'The STONES wanna know if you wanna open for them in San Francisco,' and it was like, 'Duh, of course, we will. Just name the day and place and we'll be there.' We obviously hadn't opened for anybody for a few years but if you're gonna open for anybody, open for the STONES. I mean, c'mon!

"It's the second show — [we played] two shows [with THE ROLLING STONES] in a row — and some assistant with, like, five walkie-talkies and a water-bottle holder, whatever, comes in before the show and says, 'Do you want your picture taken with THE ROLLING STONES?' We were like, 'You know what? Sure. Why not?' So after our show and then they're getting ready to go on, this assistant comes in and says, 'OK, be ready in five minutes' or whatever. So she comes in, she escorts us into this place in the tunnel leading into the stadium and she says, 'Wait here.' As we're standing in this tunnel, literally, and this band EVERCLEAR — who were playing also — they were kind of like over there on their 'X'. So we're standing there and we go over and say 'Hello' to the guys in EVERCLEAR, 'Hey, how was your show?' And this assistant comes back and says, 'No. The guys in METALLICA stay here, and the guys in EVERCLEAR stay over here.' We were like, 'Whoaaah.' So then about five minutes later the STONES come in, and I swear they didn't stop — they slowed down their pace, or their walk, just slow enough to get, like, two or three pictures taken, two or three frames shot with EVERCLEAR, and then they came over to where we were standing waiting, and they all looked at us… No, actually, Charlie Watts said 'Hello' and I think Keith [Richards] nodded or something, and Mick [Jagger] looked like we were all gonna give him pneumonia or something — he had this disgusting look on his face. And then they slowed down long enough while the photographer took two or three frames, and then they walked off. And then the assistant came over and said, 'If the band approves the photo, we'll send you a copy.' That kind of sums up THE ROLLING STONES experience. [Laughs] But being up on stage, that was awesome and the legacy and the whole thing, but that kind of left me with a little bit of a strange taste in my mouth . . . If we ever pulled that, would you come and find me and shoot me? I mean, seriously? But it was a great night and getting a chance to just be part of… If you can sit there and tell your kids, 'I opened for IRON MAIDEN, I opened for DEEP PURPLE, and I opened for THE ROLLING STONES,' then you're pretty much good to go, you know what I mean?"

thanks for your post "tell me..."
somehow funny, but also a bit disturbing, that my meet and greet i had with the stones was exactly the same as it was for metallica...
well, it certainly was a good "ego-check" for metallica, but i really dont understand why the boys are doing those meet and greets when they hate it so much!
and metallica is not just a highschool rockband...they should also show a bit of respect.
the singer of the hellacopters told me, that the stones were not friendly at all and didnt even wanna shake hands properly...

Didn't The Chilli Peppers have a similar story to tell? What a crappy, corporate, over-managed, sterile world they live in these days, the Stones I mean.

Dreadful experience for Lars indeed. For myself I wouldn't even want to go to a meet and greet if it was carried out in that fashion. That sounds like a total disgrace and very uncool behavior from the Stones.

I don't want to meet them. I just want to see them play.

Keith and Ronnie were very friendly with us fans, Mick and Charlie a bit reserved, but very polite. I will keep that moment from the meet and greet with me for the rest of my life.

Well, it's not like the Stones have a relationship with Metallica and maybe have never met them before. I'm sure people like Buddy Guy who has opened for them in the past and truly respect him go about the backstage handling much different.

Metallica was on the bill to increase ticket sales for that market. Just a business decision.

Lars never said if the band received the photo.

so they should only behave nice and cool with poeple they know and respect?
this behaviour is completely uncool!
some people on this board would defend the stones even if they started WW3...

i think that Stones don`t know M etallica - why should they? it is not legendary soulful bluesman.....anyone from their mythology....

i think that after some 45 years of being the stones their conciousness has changed. Ordinary people just think "i am one of the crowd" but the Stones think "us and the rest"
I guess it could be from a cychological point of view understandable

Personally, I can't stand Metallica's music. No 'roll' whatsoever (at least to my ears), and you know what Keith said about having the 'rock' without the 'roll'

Apparently a lot of people like them, but I have to wonder if there is much overlap between hardcore Stones fans and hardcore Metallica fans.

none what so ever, but that still is no reason for the stones to be rude

First of all, we weren't there, and so we don't know how the Stones actually acted. Even assuming they were a bit standoffish, why should they have to be warm and nice to every single person they meet. Especially other rock stars? I say, if you're going to snub someone, snub a rock star ... they get enough adulation already!

Rolling Stones have no time for the "commons" aka: Metallica

it's 5 or 10 minutes of their oh so precious time....i've been at a meet and greet. it took 2 minutes. no private pics, no signatures, nothing. i just don't know why they do it at all then.
a friend of mine has won a m&g with metallica. they were allowed to chatt, bring a camera, bring stuff to sign, and it took about 20 minutes. that's the way it should be. if thats too much for them, they should just leave it. i really love the stones, but those stories just pi.ss me off. what's all that down to earth blabla of keith worth then?

yeah lars is an ar.sehole. dont like him at all. so for this reason, it was kinda funny that the stones didnt show any respect.
on the other hand, it's just really arrogant and not cool at all what the stones did!
