Irma Thomas: stepping out from the shadow of the Rolling Stones

Great article here, but one correction to make.
Irma was born in a town across Lake Pontchartrain from New Orleans.
Lake Charles is itself a town on the other side of Louisiana from New Orleans.

Great! Love Irma, she's a true soul survivor... Must say the Stones made TIOMS their own, as well - which is what should happen with a great artist covering a great song...

thanks for posting, Edith Grove! She, (along with the great Bettye Lavette) deserves full recognition.

Her TIOMS is a regular on my iPod....

Quote from DT > Ruler of My Heart (later reinterpreted by Otis Redding as Pain in My Heart)
entirely different songs

I think she stepped out of the Stones shadows a long time ago, if not amongst hardcore stones fans certainly soul/r&B fans and music fans in general.

Pain in my heart is clearly a rework of Ruler of my heart! All is the same, but for the slightly different vocal twist on the chorus.
I think Irma's TIOMS is infinitely superior to that of the Stones (who did better on Still Life IMO).
Irma is a true great. Even her recent albums for Rounder have stunning moments.
Perhaps the greatest song in her carrier: her 1973 rendition of "A Woman left lonely". Sends chills down one's spine.
