What Stones Album Did You Hate At First Listen - Only To End Up Loving?

If this has been discussed before, I apologize. Sometimes we need to hear an album a couple of times before we get into it. I was wondering about Stones albums that you simply couldn't stand at first listen, only to end up loving it. The Stones album I first remember absolutley hating the first time I listened to it was Let It Bleed. I was just getting into the Stones in those days and the album I equated with the Stones sound was Between The Buttons. I played that thing over and over and absolutely loved it. I also loved Jumpin' Jack Flash, so to me, when I first heard Let It Bleed, it had a really dark feel and sound to it compared to Between. I was really intrigued by the cover, so I didn't just put it at the back of my LP box. At a later time I gave it a few more listens and finally realized that the this was really a collection of rock and roll gems. This album also helped me to evolve my tastes into the present, realizing that if I was going to enjoy all the Stones music I needed to move past 1967. Unfortunately, I never learned to move past the 70's in my overall taste in rock, so I will be stuck in that decade for the rest of my life. But oh what a decade it was!

I did not like Exile on Main Street. I actually sold my first copy to one of my teachers. Now it would be one of my "island disks". Everytime I listen to it I hear something new.

I didn't like Steel Wheels first off. It grew on me and now I love it. The production is too late 80s and too clean, but it still has some kind of dirt in it because it sounds more analog (than digital), compared to today's recordings.

Since the world went digital, most new music have sucked.

"Hate" is too strong word, but the most dramatically I have changed my opinion about is EMOTIONAL RESCUE, to an extent GOAT'S HEAD SOAP and BLACK & BLUE, perhaps BRIDGES TO BABYLON, too.

The reverse: first liked very much, and after some time not: STEEL WHEELS, to an extent DIRTY WORK (the album I tried to like, but never achieved really).

I didn't hate Undercover at first but was not all that impressed but but I rediscovered it about 10 years ago and love it, a much underrated album.

I'm with Ket on this. Other than the title track I did hate it. When I heard 'Too Much Blood' I simply thought This is not The Stones.
And that album cover with non-sensical inserts...

But now that we're well out of the '80's I can see it in a different light.

I still think that 'Undercover of the Night' was the last single release they could have had a potential chart number 1 with.

me neither. i was about 10 when i got into the stones. just knew the 60ies smashhits and my stepfather gave me EXILE as a present. i was really disappointed and it just sounded like pure noise to me. now it's among my top 3 albums of all times!

I also learnt to love Undercover. It is a very underated album, and IMO their last good, honest album.

I was hugely disappointed with Undercover, and nothing since has changed my mind about it.

None. If I didn't like then, I don't like it now.

Emotional Rescue - one of those records that left me cold for years (decades, even) until I dusted it off, slapped it on, turned it up... and then it finally somehow just clicked with me - the songs, the production, the vibe - I finally "got it".

Or maybe I just like how the guitars sound. Either/or, it's all good!

i think the most dramatic change (though i did not Hate it first and I dont Love it now wholly) has happened with Goats
speaking of songs: pretty beat up (it was the song i hated on undercover at my first listen, now it is my favourite one on that record)

GHS. I have never like Exile.

I used just to like Exile, but it always grows... smiling smiley Now it's second, just after Sticky Fingers.
Also, Let It Bleed is a love-hate relationship sometimes, but of course hate is too strong word smiling smiley

Albums, albums... It's hard not to like Stones albums... tongue sticking out smiley Talking about songs, when I first heard "Tumbling Dice", I thought it's kinda stupid. But then amazing live version from Love You Live, my real live Stones show and aaah, you got to roll me since then grinning smiley

Between the Buttons.

Didn't like in the mid 70'ies - now I just like it very much.

Strangely, no one's referred to any live albums yet. Some of them have never grown on me!

Black and Blue certainly didn't grab me at first listen. The single seemed strange; there were too few songs; the second side got off to a weak start. But now I love the album.

I wouldn't say I HATED it but I took some time for sticky Fingers to grow on me. Now I consider it one of the all time great albums.

Exile....it was hailed as a masterpiece and I just didn't get it...I tried to...but it wasn't until I really listened to it while on a long drive across Texas that I got it...and when I got it...I got it.

Hated Goat's Head Soup first time I heard it. Now think it's very good especially the track "winter" Mick doing what he does best.
