I think it depends what they were replaced with.

...but Midnight Rambler is one of my favorites live.

MR is too special to be considered a warhorse. Everything else can go though.

a night with obscurities would be fine
but my hope & anchor song is Tumbling Dice...

on the other hand, while your at it it - play another never before live performed song instead.

Midnight Rambler is a weird one. It's played almost as often as a warhorse yet it's retained a magic and essence to it that still hasn't diminished. Maybe because it's the only song that they can play differently each time and just have fun. The other warhorses are a strict structure that don't allow for adventure. MR is the opposite....the tempo changes...the jams..the ups and downs....it's a new monster each night.

MR is a song that one should not get sick of. First off, it's way better than 98% of any of their hits.

Well, I think that about sums it up.

Could someone please start a thread that defines/identifies what songs are the warhorses, including any of the recent tunes (You Got Me Rocking for example)? Just so there is a concise list...or at least something that can be somewhat agreed upon and talked about. I know there was something in one a while back recently but why not have a thread about that in partiuclar?

The original question is unnecessary 'cause we're probably gonna get ALL the warhorses next time around as well.

Well without having to start another thread, I think the songs that are safely labeled warhorses are:

Start Me Up
Jumpin Jack Flash
Satisfaction
Brown Sugar
Tumblin' Dice
Honky Tonk Woman
Sympathy For The Devil

*You Got Me Rocking is 85% certified warhorse

These are the songs that make it in most every show. Not only that, these are the songs that are victim to many complaints by people here. If they instill a sigh or a grunt when it's seen in a set list--then it's a warhorse. That quality combined with the frequency of it being played, to me, proves it's a warhorse.

Well I don't really know what a warhorse is in general terms , but if it is meant as the staple diet songs as in the list Jusatin supplied, it would not bother me one bit if they never played Satisfaction or Browwqn Sugar again, Satisfaction has become dragged out longer and longer as the years have passed by , no longer the classic song it was when it first burst out of the radio speakers in 1965 . Brown Sugar too has become elongated and now the chorus is just ''sugar'' for gods sake just to make it last that bit longer, well in my opinion it doesn't last longer it just goes on and on .
I love to hear Can't Always Get '' on most occasions it is after all meant to anthemic and was originally a long song ,same with Rambler and Sympathy so I would choose those three songs to be the heart and soul or core if you like ,they can choose whatever else they want to play around those gems, exept of course Miss You I have never liked this song and it really pissed me off once in (Twickenham sept 2003 rearranged gig ) when some girl went ''Oh I really like this one ''and started jumping up and down like a demented dog and soon as it finished sat down for the rest of the gig I meam WTF

No Stones show is complete without Jumping Jack Flash.
If I went to a show that not included JJFLASH in the set list, I would feel cheated.

Jumpin' Jack Flash and the Honky-Tonk Women (sounds like some weird new band).

And I do wish they'd play Gimme Shelter again.

I wouldn't going to a show and not hearing any warhorses...or what is considered warhorses on this thread.

Warhorses and Dead Flowers
December's Children and Everybody's
What do you need to hear
In this Atomic atmosphere

(mmm sounds like a kind of Andrew Loog Oldham "linernotes")

For me: something Berry-esque and early Jagger/Richards songs, like:

Reelin'& Rockin'/ Route 66 / It's all over now / Not fade away / The Last Time

the warhorses from 1964/5

Start Me Up
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Satisfaction
Brown Sugar
Tumbling Dice
Honky Tonk Women
Sympathy For The Devil
It's Only Rock'N'Roll
You Got Me Rocking
You Can't Always Get What You Want
Paint It Black
Miss You

I could certainly see a show without these. For some reason I have never included Street Fighting Man in there even though it is an often played song live and on radio. It's just one of those songs that I couldn't possibly get sick of.

There are eight songs that should be played at every Stones concert

Satisfaction
Jumping Jack Flash
Street Fighting Man
Sympathy For The Devil
Honky Tonk Women
Gimmie Shelter
Midnight Rambler
Brown Sugar

warhorses are great when they are played in new ways... SFM lasting for 6 minutes (or JJF for 7) like on Licks Tour, also Ronnie should kick "the second solo" in TDice like Taylor on Brussels Affair, and the list goes on and on...

I love warhorses.. just change something in the way you're playing them, please... smiling smiley
