Most Underappreciated Stones Song, and Reasons

My vote goes to Hand of Fate. I love the slow funky beat, Jagger's vocals, and the Keith and Mick harmonizing. I don't particularly care for the fancy solos (by Wayne Perkins, I think), but the brief 17 second Keith solo after the refrain is phenomenal. I never could understand why it was not performed more live, or got more radio play.

Enjoy.

I think Torn And Frayed is underappreciated - I realize it's on Exile and therefore has been widely heard but I've never really heard anyone talk about what a major song it is. First of all, the Mick/Keith relationship is the most fascinating relationship within the Stones and we have a country-ish song that is clearly a Keith type song but the lyric is Mick describing Keith. The central metaphor of the song - the torn and frayed coat of the guitar player is the most profound one ever used in a Stones song IMO.Keith's backing vocals are amazing as they are on all of Exile. This song never fails to move me and that's why I think it's an underappreciated song. Also love the pedal steel solo(probably added at Sunset Sound).

"I Got The Blues" is a great song that rarely gets props on here. Nice Otis Redding-type song. Love the guitar tone and Mick's vocal.

"2000 Man" is one ..don't know that its the 'most' underappreciated. I love the way the beat changes, and the crazy, kind of prophetic lyrics. Love to sing along with it.

I think the songs already mentioned are very underappreciated .. especially 'Torn And Frayed'

ah--never thought of that one that way. now whenever I listen to it I won't be able to think of it any other way..

the harmonica tone on it is very unusual, as is the chord sequence

some fans are hung up on the electronics in the song - pare those down and its core you got some pretty cool blooze....

Some very good ones here, especially "Torn & Frayed". I would add "Let It Loose" and "Coming Down Again".

Citadel.

Great song. Chunky guitar. Great melody. Horrible album. Had it been a single like Rainbow/Light Years maybe it would have gotten more recognition?

People are coming up with some great ones here. How about the following:

Silver Train. Amazing ambience, awesome guitar work by both MT and Keith, crazy great lyrics; Mick's vocals are inspired. Plus Charlie kicks it. It got a bit of air play when released on Goat's Head Soup, but it seems all but forgotten now.

Oh yeah, that's a great one.

Not to mention the live version, which is probably one of the coolest version of any stones song... EVER.

Agreed 100%, Scaffer. "Silver Train" really rocks and rolls but the tune is too close to "All down the line"(same key G, same chord progression). I love the ST video as well, very glam and wild. I haven't forgotten ST and never will!

Doesn´t Keith say in this uncut interview, that he wrote the lyrics to that song and to Happy?

If Keith wrote the words to Torn And Frayed then it's even more brilliant than I thought. I was influenced by a comment in the second edition of the Rock & Roll Lists book where there's an annotated list of the 50 greatest Stones songs and the comment for Torn And Frayed was something along the line of Mick peeking through Keith's keyhole.

Parachute Woman... could have been as well performed somewhere in a smoky bar in Clarksdale, Mississippi, way back in 1937...

They should come out with a new compilation for 2013 called 'Fifty Flickers: [46] over - looked classics [and 4 new songs of which 3 are complete crap]'

they songs in [] is thoughts that are implied.

which 46 songs do you think should be included?

Note: These are NOT the 46 BEST songs not on Forty Licks!!! I also limited my choices to (Jagger/Richard) compositions.

01.) Tell Me (You're Coming Back)
02.) The Spider And The Fly
03.) Gotta Get Away
04.) Think
05.) It's Not Easy
06.) Back Street Girl
07.) She Smiled Sweetly
08.) My Obsession
09.) Ride On, Baby
10.) Sittin' On A Fence
11.) 2000 Man
12.) Child Of The Moon
13.) No Expectations
14.) Parachute Woman
15.) Jigsaw Puzzle
16.) Salt Of The Earth
17.) You Got The Silver
18.) I Got The Blues
19.) Moonlight Mile
20.) Casino Boogie
21.) Torn And Frayed
22.) Loving Cup
23.) Let It Loose
24.) 100 Years Ago
25.) Hide Your Love
26.) Winter
27.) Dance Little Sister
28.) Hand Of Fate
29.) Melody
30.) Crazy Mama
31.) When The Whip Comes Down
32.) Some Girls
33.) Send It To Me
34.) Down In The Hole
35.) All About You
36.) Neighbours
37.) Worried About You
38.) Terrifying
39.) Blinded By Love
40.) Continental Drift
41.) Moon Is Up
42.) Out Of Tears
43.) Jump On Top Of Me
44.) Already Over Me
45.) Might As Well Get Juiced
46.) Back Of My Hand

Non (Jagger/Richards):

1 Heart Of Stone (Nanker Phelge)
2 Play With Fire (Nanker Phelge)
3 No Use In Crying (Jagger/Richards/Wood)
4 Winning Ugly (Jagger/Leavell/Richards)
5 Had It With You (Jagger/Richards/Wood)
6 Almost Hear You Sigh (Jagger/Jordan/Richards)

Monkey Man and Far Away Eyes Are Not Included due to the Stones seemingly understanding attitude that most fans like these two compositions. I also realize most people love Coming Down, Again but I find it completely boring.

I like or love most of the choices people are mentioning on here, but with the exception of maybe Citadel or I Got the Blues, a lot of them are ones I never considered vastly underappreciated. Well, maybe 'Where the Boys Go' as well (which I always loved).

My vote would be the charming psychedelic trainwreck that opens 'Satanic Majesties' "Sing This All Together". Good melody, a catchy singalong chorus and some nice little chord changes going on there (though the horn break is just goofy).

For me, it's "Hold Back":

I think I've read that The Stones themselves considered it not so good, but it was included on Dirty Work because of the drum sound or something. But I've always loved it.

Great list chenry9195!

Good to see you mention Winning Ugly. Very amusing and underappreciated number.

Torn and Frayed is easily one of the 2-3 best songs on EOMS.

Citadel is another great choice, what a great guitar sound! That and other unappreciated songs like Flight 505 off of Aftermath was a definite precursor of what was to come in 1968 and later.

You will think I'm trying to be sarcastic here, but I'm not.

I have to say Gimme Shelter - in my opinion it can never ever be appreciated as much as it should be.

"Through The Lonely Nights" - beautiful; relegated to BSide of a 45. Love the texture of the wah wah, and (I think) a 12 string; piano - and Keith's high BU vocals. LOVE it!

I don't know why" - superb Jagger vocal, and almost dangerous lead by Taylor.

"Honest I Do" - quite a song.
"Down Home Girl" - great arrangment.
"Think" - has one of my favorite seconds in music ; period.

One of my favorites; TOPS!

I didn't read much about it on this board. It has some slick R&B groove in it and I love the combination of backing vocals and the minimal beautiful riffs from Mick Taylor.

the fact that it typically, along with SFM, wins polls as greatest RS song ever just ain't good enough for you, eh? boy, you talk about your whiners....
