Speaking of remixes: Paint It Black

You've probably heard of Guitar Hero 3, the Nintendo Wii video game. The one where you use a plastic guitar in place of the normal control pad and "play along" with famous songs, just like karaoke.

I had the chance to try this at a friend's place yesterday. The game contains a bunch of classic rock songs, and one of them are Paint It Black, the original 1966 single version by the Stones.

When you play along, and you hit the wrong "notes", part of the music actually disappears, so as to make the song sound lousy if you play lousy. If your timing on the guitar is perfect, the song will sound perfect. But if you miss a lot of notes, you'll actually hear Jagger's 1966 Paint It Black vocals a capella. Apparently they got the tapes from Abkco, so they could separate the original channels perfectly.

Actually pretty cool!

Pretty uncool that Abkco sells the Stones original music to Nintendo but still can't include one single outtake, remix, live or other kind of bonus track on their actual CDs.

By the way, hearing Aerosmith's Same Old Song And Dance from 1974 in the same game, I thougt it sounded awesome remixed for the game. Same as the original but a better beefier mix.

I have Guitar Hero 2. That's the one with CYHMK. At one point I was able to get 89% on the hardest difficulty for that song. And believe me it's hard. When you're almost done with the game you have to play Stonehenge in England. The chorus song for that concert is Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd. After the last song at the gig the game says: "The crowd is cheering for an encore. Do you want to play an encore"? I press YES. Then it says: "The encore is Free Bird (Lynyrd Skynyrd). Do you want to play Free Bird"? I pressed YES again. "Do you REALLY wanna play Free Bird"? YES again. "Are you SURE you wanna play Free Bird"? Yes again. I loved that.

That's strange. A friend of mine has one of the Guitar Hero games and has told me of it and I am quite sure I can remember her saying Gimme Shelter was one of the songs you could play along.

Gimme Shelter is on the game Rock Band for PS3 and Xbox 360 (made by the same people who did the first two Guitar Heros). It's a great mix too, because you can clearly hear the extended Keef solo while Mary Clayton is singing which is kinda obscure on Let it Bleed.

As far as remixes, I have a version of Paint It Black on my iPod with just the insturments. I got it from here actually.

Gimme Shelter, I believe, is on Rock Band. Played it...or actually sang it. Although...I don't think any of the Stones tracks on this or Guitar Hero are the ACTUAL recordings but are re-recorded to match them. If they are not the original recordings in the menu it'll say after the title "made famous by....The Rolling Stones" and then you know that it's not the original track.
