who is playing the opening sequence of chords?
is this an open g or ? tuning?
what kind of guitar is that sweet sound from?
type of amplifier?
are there any video clips of someone strumming this sequence?

Come to think of it - The Stones reused this riff for Rock And A Hard Place and It Must be Hell ( that´s how it sounds to me, anyway).
So, it must be open G or similar.

100% Keith, open G, probably a Gibson.

Mathijas? Where are ya?

Yeah, it sounds like an open G. And, yeah, it's been recycled!

All guitars open G tuning.

Chords:
Verse: D Bb G
Pre Chorus: C F Bb C D
Chorus: Must Be Hell/Rock & Hard Place RIFF
Bridge: Bb D Bb D

Opening riff:

D----------------------------------------------------------------
H--8--7-----3-5--4-3-----1--1------------------------------------
G--9--7-----3-4--5-3--0--2--2--0---------------------------------
D--7--7--0--3----3----0-----0--0-------0-------------------------
G--7--7-----3----3----0-----0--0--2-4----------------------------

I think the 8'er should be on H, and the 9er on G in the first chord there...

Yes you are right, edited it now. Filled in wrong fret numbers for the wrong strings. Thanks..

It's in open G. Similar to Brown Sugar in key phrasing only with minors thrown in...It Must Be Hell was a total rip of this song.

Rock And A Hard Place? No. Hell no! If anything, RAAHP is just Jiving Sister Fanny backwards really fast minus being good.

And that is a very very shallow 'if anything'.

The opening chords are only played three times.

What you mean are the chords in the refrain, right? drinking smiley

Not only covered by themselves in 1983 and 1989, also
by Lou Reed´s "Dirty Blvd.". Great track, btw.

The guitar sounds like a Telecaster to me, through either an Ampeg V4/VT-22 or Fender Twin.
