I think both Bill and Sir Paul are overlooked in general.
Back in the 70's I liked the Chris Squire/John Wetton style.
Does Jaco Pastorious count here?

3 fine bassists indeed but you've set yourself up for a slaughtering I'm afraid by saying no one else comes close. That's nieve at best. I'm not going to rattle off other bassists for the sake of it but I will give you a few examples of guys I'd say 'come close'. Our own Darryl (I keep saying it but Miles Davis didn't employ duds),John Deacon and Jaco Pastorius. All bassists first and foremost, not just other instrumentalists who couldpluck out a few lines on a bass.

Phil Lynnot? Cliff Burton? Dee Dee Ramone? Dave Alexander (Stooges)? Lee Rocker? I think it is impossible to choose a top three after 5 decades of popular music. If you limit this ranking to a special genre or time it's hard enough. But best bassplayers in general i would name a top 30 or more in no particular order.

Paul McCartney would disagree. Guitarist for the Beatles until Stu Sutcliffe left. Ron Wood plays some of the Stones more interesting bass lines (Break the Spell, Emotional Rescue, Shattered...) as does Keith (Happy, Casino Boogie...) Mick Taylor (Tumbling Dice...) on and on

yeah some good additions ie jack cassady, willie weeks, phil lynott, robbie shakespeare etc

pleased to see that the overall consensus does not include wyman & jones........while competent players they were never standouts unlike the real legends.

rollingstone I think you'll find out its spelt naieve.......
