One of the best is the TV video from early days with Jagger on live vocal over studio track; loved the way they pumped the real Bass guitar on those mixes in '68-'69, Taylor on black LP Custom.

Hard to choose, but the studio version, the 73 version, and the Bremen 98 version are fantastic, Brixton 95 and Tokyo 90 are rolling as well.

I have the exactly opposite feeling : MJ relied on MT's solo playing only when Keith was a wreck onstage. Most of the time it was "play your solo... ok 20 seconds already if he doesn't stop playing I'm gonna cut him", and MJ did cut MT pretty often in 73 with his famous "yeah yeah"'s which meant "shut up now"

some wreck!!, keith's playing in 73 is outstanding,
as for "yeah yeah" to me sounds more like : start winding down ,which he would do with an ending phrase.

kleermaker when are you going to start that thread?

when was keith a wreck musically onstage in 73? i don't get that at all.the yeah yeah is a cue to taylor that jagger is ready to start singing again.i also agree that jagger did love m.taylor's playing.

I have a cd live in europe , where he mentions Frankfort, GS is the last song & it is phenominal. 1973 I believe.

Just listened to Keiths version from 93 yesterday, pretty good extended take, heavy.

Depends if ya mean Stones or Winos.
Most of the mentioned renditions above do qualify in my book.
Perhaps this or other Winos' versions oughtta be in the final battle..

I don't really dig the versions with Taylor on guitar. I think he went totally OTT and lost his taste along the way. It might work with some songs but I don't feel it did for Gimme Shelter.

The original one is best but I did like how they played it on the Voodoo Lounge and Bridges To Babylon tours. Probably one of the few examples of a song played better in the Vegas years than during the early 70s IMO.

"only when Keith was a wreck onstage"

You had to read the nights KR was a wreck onstage. Believe me not all the 73 nights were the caliber of Bruxelles... eye rolling smiley

And I stand by what I say : the "yeah yeah"'s mean "shut up MT you play too long. Ypu ain't gonna change the sound of this band. We ain't prog or (even worse) Led Zep".

The funny thing is MJ STILL hates long solos : he did it again to his lead player (Steve Salas) at the 2001 L.A. "gig" during "God Gave Me Everything I Want".

To dcba:

I do not hear that at all. From very early on in the '69 tour Jagger tuned into what Taylor was playing. It took a while to get in synch on that tour, but thereafter Jagger's nods to Taylor were overwhelming favorable.

I do not dispute that Jagger will cut off a solo when he's ready, but that was his call. When Jagger said "play," Taylor would play. Watch "LIV" from L&G. Is Jagger enjoying THAT or what?

Taylor's OTT playing IMO is mostly a myth. It does not apply to '69-'71. In '72 his solos were sharp and to the point. He had only three extended solos (GS, YCAGWYW and LIV) and after so many yesrs those spots are still show highlights. By '73 his playing was more in the forefront, but I have no sense that it was without Jagger's approval. Indeed the only point of interest in "D," "Heartbreaker" and "Angie" is Taylor's solo. It was the beginning of the end.

From Happy Bday Nicky, the wah-wah version which I think is Perth. One of my air-guitar faves (air-wah pedal too!) grinning smiley

Play that wah-wah boy!

3 Amsterdam 1995 (Paradiso)
4 Keith & The Winos - here's this one:

London, 9-9-1973. Exactly the right tempo. Good sound quality too. The best version I know.

Yes! This is the definitive version, for me . . .
