LOS ANGELES (Dec. 16) - Singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg, famed for the soaring vocals and elegant instrumentation of tunes such as "Longer" and "A Love Like This," died on Sunday, three years after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer. He was 56.

"He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side," said a posting on his Web site.

I didn't know he was sick. But I always liked this guy. My favorite song of his was "Face The Fire". RIP Dan.

Remember this one, a song that always make you think of your life:

Same Old Lang Syne

(Dan Fogelberg)

Met my old lover in the grocery store,
The snow was falling Christmas Eve.
I stole behind her in the frozen foods,
And I touched her on the sleeve.

She didn't recognize the face at first,
But then her eyes flew open wide.
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse,
And we laughed until we cried.

We took her groceries to the checkout stand,
The food was totalled up and bagged.
We stood there lost in our embarrassment,
As the conversation dragged.

We went to have ourselves a drink or two,
But couldn't find an open bar.
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store,
And we drank it in her car.

We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to now.
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness,
But neither one knew how.

She said she'd married her an architect,
Who kept her warm and safe and dry,
She would have liked to say she loved the man,
But she didn't like to lie.

I said the years had been a friend to her,
And that her eyes were still as blue.
But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I saw,
Doubt or gratitude.

She said she saw me in the record stores,
And that I must be doing well.
I said the audience was heavenly,
But the traveling was hell.

We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to now.
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness,
But neither one knew how.
We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to time.
Reliving in our eloquence,
Another 'auld lang syne'......

The beer was empty and our tongues were tired,
And running out of things to say.
She gave a kiss to me as I got out,
And I watched her drive away.
Just for a moment I was back at school,
And felt that old familiar pain .........
And as I turned to make my way back home,
The snow turned into rain ..............

To Sicilian. Those are some of the best song lyrics ever written! That had to have really happened don't you think? I can see it. And at this time of year, it is way too sad. Funny how timely and untimely can collide.

Those lyrics are more sad than the Bills losing to the Browns. get out of Buffalo Sicilian.

I'll give a message to any man reading this who is over 50. Get a psa test from your doctor. Prostate cancer is very curable in early stages, but deadly if it spreads. Dan obviosly wasn''t getting his psa done. I have a family history, so I started getting tested 40, and was diagnosed in 2006 at age 43. Cancer free for 18 months. GET A PSA AT 50 or 40 IF YOU HAVE FAMILY HISTORY

I just heard that song Same Old Lang Syne a few nights ago on the radio. Sad but great song. We all have times like that when we run into an old friend/girlfriend and the years melt away.

Didn't he also do "Leader Of The Band"?. Another great sentimental song.

Yes, Fogelberg did Leader of the Band,. It was about his dad, who was in a band. And Same Old Lang Syne was based on a true story that happened to Fogelberg. It was his high school sweetheart. I'm not ashamed to admit I tear up no matter how many times I hear it, probably because I had a similar experience once.

I knew that had to be a true story! Thanks for the info. And didn't his Dad lead a marching band and compose one or more of the famous marches? LGS, it still gets me every time too. Such a well written piece! Y'all have a nice Christmas. 5

Reads a bit like ''Til The Next Goodbye."
