2 parts to this thread, first a question. What is the longest known Rolling Stones Concert performance to date?
Also, what is the longest concert performance you've attended. (I expect to see a lot of Grateful Dead here)
I have seen seen Led Zeppelin play close to 4 hours 20 minutes (with about a 55 minute D&C) and I have seen Springsteen go close to 5 hours once but his break was at least 30 minutes (and well deserved).
(BTW, if you doubt any of these, I will research the dates and post them.)
I saw the Dead at Alpine Valley, mid 80's they played for about four hours... McCartney in Munich for the Flowers in the Dirt tour, he played three hours...

1975, last show of the US leg of the tour at the L.A. Forum. (3/27 I think) They played the same amount of songs as the 2 previous nights, I think they threw in Since I've Been Loving You which they didn't do much in the US in '75. But other than that, they just extended the jams. Between Dazed and Confused, Moby Dick and No Quarter, those 3 songs themselves were about 1 hour 45. The 2 prior nights, the shows were about 3:15 and 3:30

I've always heard that the longest Stones concert (at least verified by bootleg recording) is Knebworth Open Air Festival aug. 21,1976. Anyone else heard this?

In terms of songs - Knebworth In terms of time onstage - probably Philadelphia 31.8.89. Some of the 1989 shows ran in excess of 2 and a half hours. The Atlantic City PPV clocks in at just over 160 minutes

I've read of Dead shows lasting up to 9 hours. Can that be true?
longest show I've seen was Bruce @ Wembley Stadium in 1988. From 6.30 to the 10.30 curfew, with a 25 minute break. Saw him play about 3 hrs 20 with NO break in Dublin in 2003. > > I have seen seen Led Zeppelin play close to 4 > hours 20 minutes (with about a 55 minute D&C)
Im a Zep fan but a song lasting that long sounds like hell! God knows what 'Moby Dick' must have been like that night!

Springsteen has never played 5 hours. His longest show ever was Nassau Coliseum 31/12/80, a 38-song show clocking in at a couple of minutes short of 4 hours - plus an interval (which was usually around 30 mins or so back then). The 'River' tour shows around that time (late 1980) were consistently the longest shows he's ever played. Then again, he's played a couple of the tour finales in 2000 and 2003 which ran to 3 and a half hours - without a break (he hasnt had intermissions since 1993). Not bad for a band in their mid 50's at the time.
Dylan played a rehearsal show at Toads, Newhaven , Ct in 1990 which I think ran for about 3 1/2 - 4 hours and included about 50 songs, but I think the show worked out at 8 'mini-sets' with breaks in between.

147 min 37 sec. on disc. 29 songs( 30 if you consider If You Can't Rock Me-Get Off My Cloud as two) Of course two of the songs they were playing back up for Billy Preston. I know there may be some Babylon Shows close to it but alot of that intro music and introductions. Wouldnt the Atlantic city 89 kinda be with an asterick since there were all those guests over and over?

Maybe there was a problem with the clock?
For you Zep guys, John Paul Jones indicated in an interview some time ago that the longest Zep show was the legendary Boston Tea Party show in 69 where they played 4 hours and just loads and loads of covers like Please Please Me, etc.
I have searched high and low for a recording of this but to no avail other than a horrible sounding one of about 10 songs spread over 2 CDs..... Is the whole thing available somewhere?
As for the Stones, I recall Knebworth being stated as the longest set in terms of songs and stage time.

2 hr 90 mins???
These days bands play relatively short sets, its a shame really. Most of it has to do with $ and the concert locations contract.
From what i researched the Hampton show was one of the longest of the tour. I don't know why that was. It was the first time they played in our area.Use your Illusion had not come out yet and You could be mine was released 2 days later. Then after the riot 2 weeks later in St Louis, the shows were down to 1 1/2 to 2 hours. I've talked to people who were backstage and said Axl was in rare form and in a great mood.
They didn't come on till almost 10.00, and i remember leaving around 1.30. Also it was general admisson and the crowd was really wild, not many GnR show were on that tour and may have boosted thier performance.

One of the most extendend performances must have been The Bands' Last Waltz...
In the mid eighties I saw Springsteen doing a 4 hour show (with a 30 min break) - very impressive. But I can't remember how long the Grateful Dead played at their last German Tour. I suppose 2 1/2 hrs, but I'm not sure anymore.

Just add one song = one more hour.
Otherwise I could live with a concert with old Floyd performin Echoes plus some other eposes.

really? which year? i started seeing them annually up there in '85 but it was a about a 2 hour show. i must've just missed those days when the shows went on that long.
Well the longest show I attended was McCartney's concert in 2004 - 2:45. Not too much compared with wat some of you wrote about before. Still it was a great and long show.
I was at Knebworth and I recall that at around 3 hours with an 11.30 start and a 2.30 a.m. finish (but it was a long time ago now!) but no one has mentioned Ryan Adams. His recent Hammersmith gig was an 8.20 start and an 11 o'clock finish = 2 hours 40 mins, and, more to the point, stunning!
""Organizers of the world's longest and slowest concert sounded a new chord Thursday, more than four years after the performance first began.
The John Cage Organ Project began performing the experimental U.S. composer's piece Organ2/ASLSP (or As SLow aS Possible) on Sept. 5, 2001 — which would have been Cage's 89th birthday. The piece is being performed in the abandoned Buchardi church in the German city of Halberstadt, about 60 kilometres southeast of Hannover. The recital is scheduled to last until 2639.
After beginning with a year-and-a-half of total silence, the first chord sounded in February 2003. Organizers sounded two additional notes in July 2004 and are scheduled to release them this May.
The first chord progressed into the second Thursday and will be held down by weights for the next few years. All musical changes take place on the fifth day of the month to commemorate Cage's birthdate.
A specially built organ was commissioned for the project and new pipes will be added gradually in time for further notes to sound.
Organizers say that the performance allows music lovers to contemplate the passing of time and to rediscover calm in today's fast-paced world.""
