SERIOUSLY off topic question for film/movie nuts
Posted by: paulywaul ()

In the mid/late 1980's I saw a film called PARTNERS with Ryan O Neal and John Hurt. By today's standards it is very seriously politically incorrect. Anyone heard of it, anyone know where I could track it down ?

I remember that movie I think. Two cops that had to play gay guys, although I think the John Hurt character really was gay, and Ryan O'Neil played the pretty one and got all sorts of attention and the other guy was jealous. Then I think John Hurt fell for Ryan, and by the end Ryan developed a new sense of appreciation for John? Does that sound familar. I could be mixing it up with that other Ryan ONeil movie The Main Event with Barbara Streisand. Perhaps Barbara was the other gay man.

A darker spin on the same theme is the vastly underappreciated "Cruising" with Al Pacino. Recently issued on DVD. Well worth watching. Today it can be viewed as a prophetic film about AIDS.

Partners was directed by James Burrows, one of the guys behind 'Cheers'

You got it Cindy C, the very movie. It made me laugh then and it would still make me laugh now, I'd like to get hold of a copy ... so thanks to Rockman I now know where/how I can.

Get "CRUISING" out now on DVD (as mentioned above) one of the best endings in any film EVER. Some people (a lot of people?) claim to not "get" the ending which is bizarre cause to me it was always simply clear as day.... just BRILLIANT !!! WILLIAM FRIEDKIN (the Director) was at his peak - FRENCH CONNECTION/THE EXORCIST/SORCERER - based on the French film "Le Salaire de la Peur"("The Wages of Fear" which is what it should have been called)/CRUISING - the dude was a master film maker. Saw him give a talk back in the day, a brilliant guy (who kind of lost his film making way in later years)

I've bid GBP £11.00 for it, plus a couple of £s for postage, about 2 hrs left to go and so far I'm the highest bidder, so I hope to be successful. It's a film I'd really like to see again, and I'm sure my Mrs would enjoy it too, I've spoken about it enough over the years. I'm surprised it disappeared so abruptly and completely off the shelves - so to say, but I guess that's because of the giant strides that were made during the 90's in getting rid of prejudices and negative attitudes towards gay folk. By the standards of today this film is not exactly what you would call politically correct. Bloody funny mind you, but definitely not politically correct !

Talkin' about searchin' for old films: It's pretty hard to find "The Survivors" with Robin Williams and Walther Matthau on DVD. I really like that one, but I can't get it.

Yeah , It's the only way to go unless you really overbid .

Great, thanks guys, I got it and just paid the man. Grand total GBP £13.25 including postage, so I'm happy. But what do you mean about teaching me about sniping on ebay ? Sorry, don't understand. have I overbid or something ? Bottom line is that I'm happy with what I paid for it, so .......... ?

The way to get your best deal on ebay . especially if there seems to interest in the item is to wait until the last 5 - 10 seconds to bid . Thereby shutting out the current high bidder . Sometimes you get burnt though because the bid is higher than the amount your offering .

I've "won " items for as little as $0.01 US by bidding like this . You can also read peoples bidding history by checking their previous purchases . You'd be surprised at the bidding patterns people establish .For example some always bid for instance $0.01 over a whole dollar amount eg. $5.01. If you waited as I've advised and bid $5.02 you would have won by $0.01 . It's not so much the $$ as the rush of beating out someone by such a minute amount , Glad you got your item .Welome to ebay . I suppose we'll be seeing a lot of shaddypaddy in the future

No, not really. I use Ebay so infrequently that I had real difficulties remembering my logins/passwords for both Ebay and PayPal this time round. But anyway, thanks for the tips.

Boston2006 - I'm a big ebayer too. I learned about sniping long ago after losing out on a few things. If I REALLY want an item, i'll snipe, but if I don't really care about the item, I might bid early and just let it ride out.

I started selling this year too, and there's different strategies for that, that is harder for sure. Trying to figure out what you can probably sell the item for, plus figuring in all your costs with the ebay/paypal fees and seeing if the profit is worthwhile.

Cindy ,

I think one of the biggest things about selling is the time the auction ends . I do really well on items on which I'm bidding that end in the weekday mornings ( US EST ) . Items that end about 9 - 11 pm seem to get more late hits ( weekdays ) .

Weekends don't seem to matter much , seems as if everybody is sniping then . You can also contact the seller direct and make an offer . I once was looking at a very rare cover for "Goats Head Soup " Malaysian Import . The seller was asking $75.00 and I sent a note offering $35.00 and he took it . Never hurts to ask !!
