The Band

I'm wondering if there are any Band's fans here.
I'm sure that there are quite few!
As for me I think is one of the most important and underestimated rock bands ever!
I really love them!
Martin Scorcece's Last Waltz is THE rock n' roll film!

You're right about the Band and you're right about the film, though I watch it without the narrative bits, just love the playing on the night: what a show. Wish I'd bin there. Anyone out there who actually was?

I am a huge Band fan, really unbelievable musicians and some timeless albums and live appearances. I still marvel at the imagination of Garth Hudson and the mastery he had with the organ and inventive flourishes he inserted into many of their classic tunes.

greatest band ever from North America....bar none

I included them here in my top five bands of all time.

It's so hard to find fault with ANYTHING on their first five albums. Yes, they are THAT good.

More to the point, they sound as fresh as ever. Geniuses at work.

absolutely....a more talented group of MUSICIANS you'll be hard pressed to ever find again. they all checked their egos at the door (until things began to unravel) and produced some timeless, sublime music. Also - they rocked as hard as anyone live - check out the Little Richard, Slippin' and Slidin' on the Festival Express for as good an example as any....

Great band, always been a fan of Rick Danko. They had a great sound, reminded me a bit of Little Feat when I first discovered them. The Last Waltz gets you fired up when you first read "This should be played loud"...

I was lucky enough to go to the Last Waltz. It was unbelievably expensive for the time (I think $37). I was seeing the Grateful Dead for $7 at the time.

They undersold the venue due to a symphony playing for the Thanksgiving Dinner. Bob Dylan brought smoked salmon for all! You could walk upto 20 feet of the stage and not be jammed in.

I was really into the Band at the time. They had played the Santa Cruz (California) that summer (1976) and it was really amazing. The venue only held 2000. The best part of the Last Waltz was The Band. They were on fire that night. The only song that drove me wild was Claptons tunes with them. Robbie Robertson had a kinda duel with Clapton and it was wild.

Neil Young was very buzzed and was all over Joni Mitchel. It was a blessing to see Muddy Waters. And,it seemed the Band was most impressed to play with Neil Diamond. After the long jam with all of the all stars, The Band came back out and did 'Don't do it' as a finale- powerful!

The sad thing was the recording of the music was bad. They had to get bootleg tapes from fans, and The Band had to go into the studio to re-create some of the music (at least that is what I heard). I think that is why they left out some of the great all star stuff, and did to much commentary. But, all of this is just rumor; or hear say from a long time ago. But, it was a hell of a show! I was lucky to be going to University of San Francisco at the time. And boy, my mom was pissed I missed THanksgiving dinner- never heard the end of it.

.......great story dougie.......I think someone else who posts on this forum was also there....with his (or her?) parents if I recall correctly.......Yeah I loved the movie back when it first came out. I always imagined how much fun it must've been to have been there.

Yeah, I was there. I was there to mainly see Muddy Waters so everything else was the cherry on top of the sundae. When Van the Man did his kicks everybody was cracking up. I think I paid 25 bucks for the show. We got fed and everything. I even went back to the the New Otani Hotel to chat with the fellas afte show. It was a magic night.

They are indeed a great band, and one of the best!
But the "greatest band ever from North America"???
Hmmm...I don't think so.

He did, after Richard Manuel had died.

I think I met The Band before the Stones ( saw The Last Waltz in theatre before having a copy of Roled Gold smiling smiley ) I saw the movie about 17 times before being able to catch the audio recording.
A few years ago I finally get the dvd, complete with bonus features. Fantastic the end jam and the announcements ( " the camera stopped after many hours of shooting " ). Really the best rock movie ever made. Can't wait for Shine a Light, can you hear me Martin ???

I just bought "The Last Waltz" DVD a few weeks ago, picked it up in the sale for £5.

I had kinda liked The Band before that, didn't think they were anything special, but the DVD really turned me on to them. Anyone who hasn't seen "The Last Waltz" (and I don't think that there will be many of you) should go out and get a copy now.

p.s. Why is Ronnie Wood listed on the credits? You see him for about 2 seconds!

I think I've bust a button on my trousers....

Why was Ronnie in town that night (THE LAST WALTZ)? Specifically for that event or for other reasons?

Go to special features or bonus tracks ( can't remember exactly ). Look for the final jam; you'll see Ronnie there, together with Clapton and the others.

There are a couple of Stones/ Band connections over the years (that I know of):

Ronnie (and Blondie) guest on Rick Danko's first solo album.

And Keith teamed up with Danko and Levon Helm (one of the best drummers ever - after Charlie of course) on All the Kings Men with Scotty Moore etc.

Anyone know of any others?

always one of my favorites...along with the stones they are part of the soundtrack of my youth. Didn't Keith once say that the Band was the best rock n roll band in the world? I seem to recall reading that somewhere once...

<<Didn't Keith once say that the Band was the best rock n roll band in the world?>>

I've read the exact opposite. A Keith interview from NME issue Dec 6'69. Headline being 'Keith Richard on Mick, Beatles, Led, Faith, Tull, Gees'

His comment on 'The Band':

'I saw them at the Dylan gig on the Isle of wight and I was dissapointed. Dylan was beautiful, especially when he did the songs by himself. He has a unique rhythm which only seems to come off when he's performing solo.'

'The Band were just too strict. It was like they were just playing the records on stage and at a fairly low volume, with very clear sound. I like some distortion, especially if something starts happening on stage.'
