Let's not work

Anyone else as disappointed as me this was somehow included on the "best of" I have probably only heard it 3 times since 1987 but always thouhgt it was stupid and remarkably un-stonesey. Boy George would be embarassed by this one. The video excacerbated the problem. Rest of the set is good but why not Hide Away for example?

Because it was a single I guess. I remember when this song came out back in 1987 I was in high school and the song (belive it or not) was actually mighty popular among the kids.

Michael can put whatever he wants on his CD. Afterall, it is HIS!

I kind of like the song. Its not his best, but I've heard worse.

The track listing seems to be geared around what singles he put out. Whilst I can understand that logic for an album titled 'greatest hits', it doesnt really work in this case because Mick's solo career hasnt really produced much in the way of chart success in the way of singles.

It would be a bit of a stretch to suggest his singles are examples of what are the 'very best of' his solo albums. Theres some very good songs on those albums, but relying on what were at the time some poor choices of singles isnt exactly a good taster for them. By digging a bit deeper, he could have turned more people (including many Stones fans) onto his solo catalogue.

ditto gazza

i was so disappointed when i heard let's work for the first time
but it made me appreciate keith, ronnie & charlie more.

was LET'S WORK popular in aerobic fitness classes?

sometimes you can get away with lame lyrics if the musical groove
is really good. i was embarassed FOR mick. winking smiley

obviously i hold the Stones in high regard....but...if mick
had never had a solo career, i think i'd hold them even HIGHER.
i'll admit...some of mick's solo stuff has made me question his "genius"
and what had previously been a Midas touch. (Everything is NOT turning to gold)

Even worse than the song itself is that Mick play-backed it in a teenage hits program in Holland with dancers with all kinds of working uniforms, I was very embarressed..

If this was based on singles Mick put out than where is Hard Women and Ruthless People. Either of those would have been better than Let's Work, even Throwaway, wasn't that the first single off Primitive Cool.

I saw that. was it "Countdown" ?

However, if its any consolation there was a Top of the Pops appearance the same month (his first since 1971) which was far worse.

Embarrassed isnt the word. I actually hid behind the settee when it was on.

The cringe factor has always been effect with Mick, think of some of those videos they did for Goat's Head and IORR. But we cringe as fans cause it maybe embarasses us more than Mick since we are so passionate about the Stones. That would actually make a good thread here. Times throughout your life where you have cringed because of something the Stones did, usually Mick.

*******

you're right. and you're also right that it would make a good thread.

i cringed when Mick tried to do the SNL intro with Jon Lovitz. (he was nervous)

i cringed when Keith & Ronnie tried to help Bob Dylan at Live Aid.

i cringe whenever bill wyman speaks.

i cringe when reporters ask charlie watts stupid questions.

i've NEVER cringed at anything that Ron Wood has done. (well..maybe
a little when mick try to tongue him during the '78 Sat. Night Live performance)

What does it matter how good or bad Micks solo stuff is, he has enough success with the Stones. He want's to do other stuff and experiment, he can afford to and it doesn't matter if it flops or not. He would like it to be good I suppose, i like most of his solo stuff, just think of all the people who would like to write and experiment but havn't got the money of backup, good on you Mick carry on just as you are.
