The *quintessential* Stones Song
Posted by: nikki bong ()

So let's say an alien (no, this is not political), or, worse yet, a Beatles fan comes to this planet for a visit: one with no prior knowledge of what the Stones are "about." If you had to choose one quintessential Stones song to demonstrate who the boys "are," and what they do, what would it be?

I'm thinking probably All Down The Line: it has everything you want in a Stones song: superbly intense rhythm guitar, blistering leads, great throway lyrics, not-so-subltle drug references, screeching horns, thundering percussion, and more importantly, that classic Stones "swing."

Rocks Off & Bitch to mind as, well.

and you?

There are so many...

Popular:
Satisfaction and Let's Spend The Night Together, both about sex.

Jumpin' Jack Flash and Sympathy For The Devil, both about the beginning of the relationship of Rock 'n' Roll and the dark side.

Brown Sugar, Start Me Up, Rough Justice. Ass-kicking rockers in 3:00-3:40 min.

Angie as a megahit for non-rockers.

Not popular, but still brillant:
Uncountless tracks. Ballads, rockers, experimental, disco, politics and much more.
She Said Yeah, Mother's Little Helper, No Expectations, Sway, Sister Morphine, All Down The Line, Heartbreaker, Star Star, Fingerprint File, Hey Negrita, Respectable, Shattered, Emotional Rescue, Too Much Blood, Continental Drift, Break The Spell, Highwire, Flip The Switch, Might As Well Get Juiced, Sweet Neocon.

yeah - and then what would you show them after they've stopped laughing and picked themselves back off the floor. Christ almighty, if ever a video was a Jagger mince-fest, it's that one.

Gimme Shelter (studio) without question. It's a perfect song in every way.
Either that, or Midnight Rambler - any version!

Honky Tonk Women

It's not my favourite Stones song but I think that it is an absolutely great example of what the Stones were all about,

A great rock n roll rhythm,
Loud guitars and great riff,
Dirty Lyrics,

Superb!

I think I've bust a button on my trousers....

i'd probably get them a cold beer or two to keep the body occupied, then sit them down and make them watch Ladies and Gentlemen, to keep the mind occupied - classic setlist encompassing every type of song the Stones do well, hard rockers, groovers, ballads, acoustic country, guitar playing showcases, showmanship - from one of the best Stones periods!

You have to demonstrate the raw riffing power of a great Stones rocker with an example of their ability to write a classic pop song with a great chorus so.....this is really hard....I've have to go for....Jumping Jack Flash.
Mind you, if they were an alien they might appreciate 2000 Light Years From Home!!
