OT: Elvis Costello, Paolo Nutini and BRMC

Got a chance to see Elvis Costello and Paolo Nutini on Friday night. I also got to see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club a few weeks ago. I know all opened at least one Stone show on the ABB Tour.
I've seen Elvis before, but this was my first time seeing Paolo. Both were good...but I can't see either being a great opener for the Stones. Elvis has always appealed to a different crowd...and while he was entertaining, I'm not sure who Paolo's target audience is.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club was a club show. The band really didn;t connect with the audience at all, despite the small venue
How were they accepted as openers at Stones shows?
(My only ABB show was Toronto, and we got Beck as an opener, who was great)
