Your "dream-bootleg"
Date: December 21, 2004 12:14

Pick 10 songs from bootlegs (live) and make a compilation. Song, year and city:

1. Rock's Off, 1973, Perth
2. When The Whip Comes Down, 1978, Memphis (or Detroit. May be wrong credit on Handsome Girls-cover...)
3. All Down The Line, 1978, Detroit
4. Undercover, 1989, Atlantic City
5. Let's Spend The Night Together, 1981, Hampton
6. Heartbreaker, 1973, Brussels
7. Beast Of Burden, 1978, Fort Worth
8. You Can't Always Get What You Want, 1975, New York (Hold On Tight-version)
9. She Said Yeah, 1966, Paris (1st show)
10. Moonlight Mile, 1999, Philaldelphia

Uh, this is hard, but I think this would do for a great album...

It’s very hard, really. Today could be these:

1. Brown Sugar (Rotterdam 73)
2. All Down The Line (NYC 26/7/72)
3. When The Whip Comes Down (1978 Memphis or Detroit. May be wrong credit on Handsome Girls-cover...) (agree with Powderman)
4. Let It Rock (Handsome Girls disc 3, can't remember where)
5. Midnight Rambler (London 9/9/73)
6. Twenty Flight Rock (Hampton 18/12/81)
7. Street Fighting Man (Philly 72, can’t remember actual date)
8. Gimme Shelter (Philly 72, can’t remember actual date)
9. YCAGWYW (L&G soundtrack)
10. IORR (LA 75 not-Friday-but-Sunday boot)

Would have to check the tracklist order, too. Tomorrow could be others...

Funny. Every Stones fan have to say that the Stones are still great on stage (with Ronnie), but when they have to choose the best, 60-80 % of the tracks are played with Mick Taylor...

The gold era !

Please allow me to correct: the Stones WERE still great on stage (with Ronnie), at least until 1982. grinning smiley I'm one of the ancient ones, so I'm coherent.

The classic live songs would have to be:

Gimme Shelter (either Altamont or Charlotte '72 or Brussels 1st '73)
Jumping Jack Flash - MSG 28th Nov 1969 (1st show)
Sympathy For The Devil - Hyde Park 1969
Midnight Rambler - Hyde Park 1969
Satisfaction - MSG 28th Nov 1969 (2nd show)
Street Fighting Man - London '73
Brown Sugar - Perth '73

Others to include:
Angie - Brussels 1st 1973
Under My Thumb - Hampton 1981
Time Is On My Side - Hampton 1981
When The Whip Comes Down - 1978 (the venue from Sucking In The 70's)

I'll come back with more.....@#$%& tough just off the top of my head...

I agree with all the above, find only these sorely missing:

Just My Imagination (Hampton 81) - a true highlight of the last great tour
Bitch (Sydney 26/2/73) If only for Keiths frantic soloing
Stray Cat Blues (MSG '69 or Leeds '71)

I think the Stones generally PLAYED better as a band back then, but I think Mick's onstage SINGING has been better over the last few years than ever.

I agree with Roby that the greatest Stones performances were with Mick Taylor. That doesn't mean Ronnie Wood added nothing to the band's shows later in the 70's up to the present. My dream bootleg would resemble something like this.

Brown Sugar (Brussels, 1973)
Bitch (Philly 2nd show 1972)
Start Me Up (Philly 1989)
Shattered (Philly 1989 before the power outage)
Rocks Off (Perth, 1973)
All Down the Line (Philly matinee show 1972)
Gimme Shelter (Empire Pool 1973)
Sympathy For the Devil (MSG 1969) I do like the version in Tokyo 1990
Moonlight Mile (Mar. 15, 1999 Philly)
Angie (Brussels 1973)
Midnight Rambler (Brussesl 1973)
Paint It, Black (Philly 1989)
Honky Tonk Women (Brussels 1973)
Jumpin' Jack Flash (Brussels 1973)
Satisfaction (MSG 1969)

Disc 2 might include gems such as Monkey Man (MSG 2003), Love In Vain (either Baltimore 1969 or Philly 1972), Street Fighting Man (pick your version, MSG 1969 or 1972), Hand of Fate (Paris 1976), Miss You (1978 Fort Worth, or Passaic NJ), Waiting On A Friend (Hampton 1981), Live With Me (various versions with RW, perhaps D.C. in '94 or from the BTB tour), and others.

Let's be real about this though. We could go on and on. That's how great this band is. Let's hope some of the shows and new material from the coming year could find a place on a dream bootleg next year at this time.
