Have The Stones Ever Played "Slave" live?
Date: August 31, 2007 22:48

This is one of my favourite Stones songs. Have they ever played it live? There is footage of the Stones rehearsing that song in the documentary from the "Four Flicks" DVD but I wonder if they ever actually performed it live or not.

I think it would be good live too. I used to not think so, because I thought "what would mick do?" since most of it is instrumental. But after seeing CYMK I realize they could totally pull it off. Plus there is a lot of repitition of the chorus.

plus... I was just thinking, it would be kind of remniscent of YCAGWY back in the 70s early 80s. A long funky jam.

One thing that might be interesting for the band to try would be to start with a song like Miss You and then have it take a jammy, funky twist with Daryl leading the way. It could evolve into the riff from Slave, then Fingerprint File, then maybe Thankyoufalettinmebemicelf, then 2000 Light Years from Home and then snake its way back to Miss You. No, it won't ever happen. But it would be interesting.

are you trying to take the piss or what? If so I think thats a bit of a stretch.

first of all, it doesnt sound like CYHMK. its just theres a long part of that song w/o sining. I couldnt picture what Mick would do, but on that one he moved around on stage with shakers, and it was really cool. so my comparrison to that song really pertains to "what would he do during that part?" rather than the sound of it.

and secondly, Ive always thought slave reminded me of YCAGWYW from the 70's, a similar groove. so I think it could be a throw back to that live.

<and secondly, Ive always thought slave reminded me of YCAGWYW from the 70's, a similar groove.>

?? A couple of more notes before the chord changes though. More funky, more bluesy and a great, great song IMO. Much more room for jamming than on YCAGWYW IMO.

Slave is a great, under-appreciated song.

"Daryl leading the way...." - how sad, he has nothing to do with Rolling Stones

Sounds like a Grateful Dead show. As much as I love The Stones, as musicians, I don't think they would be capable of that. They never demonstrated that ability. IMO.

Maybe my fantasy about a funk jamfest in a Stones show is insipid, but many of those who post here complain about lack of variation in the setlists. My idea at least would be something different. Think back on how If You Can't Rock Me flowed into Get Off My Cloud in the mid-70s. It's not THAT far-fetched.

But to say that Daryl Jones has "nothing to do with the Rolling Stones," well, gee, he's only been playing bass in the band for the past 13 years. He must be doing something right.

Monkeylad, Im sorry I miusuderstood you. I thought you were making fun of me for comparing slave to other songs. Ive been lampooned before for my song comparrsions, so I totally misread your post and was being defensive. I like your idea. Its good to thinkg "outside the box" like that. If we were at a pub, I would buy you a pint!

Yes of course you are right, I was half serious and half joking there
