How will you celebrate the 45. birthday of THe Rolling Stones
Posted by: 1962 ()

Tomorrow evening I am going to open a bottle of fine Hungarian red wine and listen to early Stones recordings like Bright Lights Big City, Roadrunner, Stoned, Come On, I want to Be Loved, Cops And Robbers, You Can Make It If You Try, King Bee, Down The Road Apiece and others.
And you?

Which hungarian red wine? I've got some Villany wine at home, and of course a bottle of Slivovitz! Now, that can be an idea for tomorrow!! Thanks for the reminder!

I'm going to drink to their own decision to mark the occasion by returning to their roots and playing a corporate gig for about $1million per song for a bank.

I shall play 'Its Only Rock n Roll" to celebrate!

i'm going to don my best Manuel disguise, hop on an Easyjet flight to Barcelona, and blag my way into the gig, carrying a plateful of sausage rolls and cheesy nibbles.

The Stones should arrange to get the crowd drunk on expensive booze, rope in a tribute band, slip them a hundred grand for their trouble and get them to run through about 15 'hits' while the Stones and Cohl go out and get plastered to celebrate their latest innovative way of making a fast buck for minimal effort.

No one will notice theyve been shafted or they'll be too drunk to care.

I believe the date of the Stones' birth to be 14th. of January, 1963. The official date for Charlie Watts joining the Stones.

Even Jagger said so, during the first leg of the "Forty Licks Tour" ...so there!! ;-)

yeah but he doesnt even know what albums songs like Factory Girl or Heartbreaker are on, so what would HE know? winking smiley

Considering they played about 60 shows prior to that as "The Rolling Stones" and even recorded some demos in October 1962, its safe to say they were 'born' some time before that.....

Do you need a roadie? Manager? Drug-procurer? Model-procurer? T-shirt seller? Caterer? I'll be glad to fill any or all of those roles for a mere 10% of your gross.

LOL..I've more important things to be angry about than the Stones playing a corporate show. If thats what they want to do, thats their business. Literally.
Disappointed that the only small shows are for 'non fans', bewildered at the point of it but not in the least surprised would be the way I'd look at it.
The thing is that IF the Stones are to play live after 2007, there'll be more and more of these kind of shows percentage-wise than there will be shows that you or I will be able to get to see.

Hi Gazza, that's what we wrote each other around 30 June. Are you now angry?
No matter. Let me pick up your last sentence, the one with "these kind of shows".
Chuck Leavell shows us the way you don't want the boys to go: He does a 9 venues tour through Germany and Austria in between and after the Stones tour. He plays two I-can-have-a-smoke-and-a-pee-with-the-star-scale festivals, a small club even Mick Taylor could sell out in the 90s, two charity shows of which the one at the nation's leading family's home is declared as 'private event', an invitation only show for a radio station, and three further private events: For journalists and publishers - is that a record release party or why and what? For an insurance company (that doesn't belong to Deutsche Bank) and (hold your breath!!!) for the members of Germany's parliament. Hear hear.

I wasn't planning on celebrating it. Hell, I wasn't even invited to the party.

No..LOL...after all we knew it was going to be a private show and nothings changed

I've no idea, but then again (if I'm interpreting your point correctly), I dont think Chuck has a legion of fans who would love to see him playing intimate shows but then get disappointed that when he does one he's doing it for bankers who are paying him millions of pounds for it...

if the stones want to play occasional 'private' shows - fine, let them, but dont do these kind of small shows exclusively for corporate events. And if they are going to limit their intimate shows to such occasions,, then dont insult people's intelligence by trotting out cliches about "we just love to play", "we'd never just do it for the money" or "you can keep the money, pal.." etc

Gazza, I totally agree with you and I don't have a clue why they think they are ought to do such shows - except if it's a real benefit thing (starting from the Nicaragua earthquake to, at least, SARS for their beloved Toronto) or a corporate event made public like the "Volkswagen show" in Wolfsburg in 1995.
It's us who are already paying the millions of pounds to them.

when, as close as can be tracked, was the first shows with charlie and bill?
i can't personally consider an anniversary of the birth of the band that dosen't include the rhythm section
and two founding full members, as the actual 'birth' of the band, personally.

their early history is important and always fascinating to me, and i AM certainly interested in their 'first' club gig on 7/12...
(sans bill and charlie) and subsequent activities...
but...bill and charlie were so essential to their groove, thrust and takeoff...that w/o charlie, well, i dunno if that is quite the stones yet...
to me anyway.
