One of the Stones missing?

A question that I wonder if anyone knows the answer, Have the Stones ever performed without one of the band and had a replacement for any reason?

I remember back in the sixties The Beatles did a tour (or part tour) without Ringo as he was ill.

Yeah, Brian missed a couple of shows.

last time we discussed this it turned out that Keith is the only one that they've never played without.
if you look at [www.nzentgraf.de], you'll see Mick missed a gig in september 62;
Bill didn't join until december 62, and missed a few gigs after that as well;
Charlie joined in january 63, and then missed a show in march 64.
it looks like the first ones Brian missed were in september 63, and of course he missed some in 64 too.

I wasn't on this board when it was last discussed so I would be very interested to know when each of the Stones didn't play , who was their replacement and how did the audience react to them with a member missing?

For instance who could possibly sing instead of Mick?

sorry, i just edited my post to add the details.
Paul Jones substituted for Mick in september 62; there were a few different bass players and drummers early on
(as well as some gigs with no bass); and as far as i know when Brian missed gigs they simply played without him.

yeh very cool link ty...hmmm, so charlie and bill weren't part of the band for that 'first gig' on 7/12/62??
i can't personally consider that the first stones gig then, regardless of what historians or other fans say...just personally, without wyman and watts back then, it's not quite yet 'the stones' to me...tho it must've been too cool to have been there and hear the other 3 get it on..

also didn't know that paul jones had 'sat in' for mick on occasion, or once...however that went...but real good choice!...
he's really got a great natural rockin' soul voice that guy...

Thanks ssoul, what about in recent times, I have been following the Stones since 69 but have never heard of anyone missing, I know Keith cut his finger back in the early 90's but the concerts where cancelled for that.

>> so Charlie and Bill weren't part of the band for that 'first gig' on 7/12/62?? <<

Bill joined in december 62 and Charlie in january 63.

>> what about in recent times <<

except for Brian, Mick T and Bill departing, i guess you mean -
yeah, the Stones' work ethic has been "if you can walk, you play the gig." it's pretty noteworthy
that despite all their famous decadence, it wasn't until the 1990s that they missed a gig due to illness/indisposition.
they sometimes started late as hell in 69 and the 70s, of course, but they were real far from the only ones doing that in those days.

I'm not sure, but I think that Charlie had played with them a couple of shows as a temporary drummer before he joined the band.

And Charlie was late for a 1986 Ian Stewart tribiute gig so he was replaced by Simon Kirke for a few songs.

since 1994 theyve played with bill wyman missing!

throughout much of the BTB tour ron wood was missing. (luckily keith - he was a monster on that tour - made up for his absence.)

*and i'm just like that bird - singing just for you*
