SILVER TRAIN slide guitar

Does Mick Taylor use open-G tuning for the slideguitar on Silver Train? Not in the video at least.... but by now I've come to understand that the old Stones vids aren't so reliable for the gear/tuning used on the original recording. Keith doesn't use a Open-G tuning in the video, but on the recording he clearly uses a open-g tuned guitar.

But allright.... what tuning does Mick Taylor use for the slide guitar on Silver Train?

well there is an expert or two roundabouts here who will know for sure and certain and they hope chime on in...(thinkin' Open-G and Mathijs)

to my limited understanding, taylor was mostly, if not always, in standard tuning for his slide work, it's sort of, again to my limited understanding, a kind of stylistic sonic tradmark in it's way...

i love just about everything about that wild mercury jet droning rumble of a perfect rock song..."i'm goin' home on a southbound train with a song in mah mouuthh..." so am curious for a definitive answer...

i think taylor was almost always the 'standard' tuning guy, and richards various capoed positions and open tunings made the crunch so textural and otherworldly dynamic with all those overtones and such...i love this track. sorry i don't have the definitive info but wanted to say I LOVE THIS TRACK, as long as there's a current 'silver train' thread... winking smiley

Taylor plays in standard tuning on his slide work on songs like ST, LIV, ADTL

Re: SILVER TRAIN slide guitar

standard tuning thats why Taylor is some amazing he plays many songs on slide in standard tuning which is more difficult to do.

Ditto that.

No sleight on anybody else intended, no hidden agenda ;^) ...
But any joker can play passable slide in open slide tunings.
Playing such accomplished slide as MT does in standard tuning requires an incredible talent.

Let's not forget that most guitar players (pop/rock) actually play slide in standard tuning. Blues pickers like us often use open tuning. But OpenG's got a point - most players do not sound like Taylor!

I think Love in Vain from Ya-Ya's and Stop Breaking Down from Exile are Taylor's only open G tracks.

Really? I always thought LIV was standard as well.

Oh man! his Love in Vain slide is so unbelievably haunting, with that lovely guitar feeding back whenever he lets it...and Stop Breaking Down is just a masterclass in slide guitar, it rocks!

You can play it in standard tuning as Mick did during the '72 tour but during the '69 tour he played it in open G. Remember that he used the same guitar for Love in Vain that Keith used for Honky Tonk Women!

I didn't know that, thanks.

Mick Taylor is a guitarist wich is always use standard tuning - a standard amp. an the slide is alway on the laft littlefinger. Taylor nearly always did record guitarsolo's on the first take - Very gifted steady gutarist - although a little grumpy on stage.

<Mick Taylor is a guitarist wich is always use standard tuning>

This is not correct. Have you seen him live?

I think he plays dome electric slide guitar licks on Moonlight Mile in open G tuning. Mick's slide guitar parts on Ventilator Blues are in open G. Soul Survivor again open G.

All the guitar parts in Tumblin' Dice are also in open G though I don't know if Mick Taylor played the guitar slide parts on that. I think it was Keith. Ditto on Happy.

I think you're right on MM, VB and SS. Keith plays the solo on TD in standard tuning. Taylor does not play guitar on Tumblin' Dice, bass only. Jagger plays openG. Keith plays slide on Happy though.

Acually the solo is in two parts pasted together in post production. The first bit is 100% Keith. After a few bars a second guitar comes in and ends the solo. I guess this second one is taylor (it is in standard anyway)

Taylor does NOT play guitar on the track:

Could be keith doing both, he has surprised me many times, for sure the over dubbed second part is quite clear: there are two completely different guitars and styles there!

check out the back cover of Get Yer Ya Ya's out Album and you'll see a good pic of Taylor playing LIV in Open G - the same guitar Keith plays in HTW...

Re: SILVER TRAIN slide guitar

Taylor always plays more fluid. But it sounds like Keith added an overdub for the last part of the solo. I don't agree on different style, though. Listen to Luxury and Ain't Too Proud To Beg. The same style there.

I meant different style from the 1st part!
