Mandolin Wind

What a beautiful song, I love this one. Does Woody play guitar on this? I know it's Rod, not the Faces, but I remember he played on some of Rod's early solo stuff.

Wasn't looking too good, but I was feeling real well.

yup -he plays on a large # of Rod's solo cuts during that Faces period.

But there's another guitar player there too, can't remember his name. And it's not Ronnie who plays the mandolin.

Rod actually plays the mandolin, i think (could be wrong - i know he does play the instrument)

I think (on the album???) it says that Rod forgot the name of the mandolin player. I can't remember the guitar player either.

The Quittenton guy is the one I was thinking of.

I need to look at my old album - I don't know where I got the story that he couldn't remember the guy.

I agree with you Cindy. I love this song as well. I actually used a line from it as a signature for a while.

It's probably my favourite Rod Stewart song. It's a pity Rod Stewart sold out soon after releasing Every picture tells a story.Gasoline alley is a great record as well with some amazing guitar playing by Ron.He sounds as if he was made for The Rolling Stones on those records. No wonder he joined The Stones later.

Rod Stewart said the same thing once, I can't remember where I read it.

Rod Stewart kept rocking through "Smiler" in 1974, IMO.

So Eric, which Stewart records do you recommend? So far I have heard only Gasoline Alley and Every picture tells a story.

StonesSerb,

These ones...:

An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down
Gasoline Alley
Every Picture Tells A Story
Never A Dull Moment
Smiler

They're great Rod Stewart albums from 1969-1974 . Never A Dull Moment...woa you better get that one!

But the Faces 4cdbox "Five Guys Walk Into A Bar" contains both "Faces-songs" and "Stewart-songs" and it's a fantastic compilation, including a lot of funny versions from concerts/rehearsals/radio shows.

Rod played the banjo on this number in the Unplugged show with Ronnie. But it was clear that he is not exactly adept with a banjo in his hands.

I was really disappointed with the Unplugged CD. I actually gave it to the library, so it could be appreciated by someone else.

Generous dispointment..that's well put, but it's a good idea, I think,
...sometimes I have 2 copies of a CD, or a DVD I didn't like...then I just ship it to the library.

Isn't this the guy who shares the writing credit on Maggie Mae?

A great song for sure. A whole range of emotions. The last verse is a bit of a downer. I think the last verse is left out of the Unplugged version.

I managed to delete my taping of the Unplugged one. If anyone got it, please send me a mail. Or if someone on the net selling it on DVD

Erik_Snow: Could be you saw that interview on Swedish TV where he says Mandolin Wind is his favourite.

It's a B-stage set, imagine Ronnie and Rod sitting down doing Reason to Believe, Handbags, Madolin and maybe even country comfort. How cute.
