Count me in! Saw them a few times during the eighties. Even flew out to the Ventura County Fairgrounds one weekend only to find out Garcia was laid up in the hospital. Great experience to see them live.

There are some good "Dick's Picks" from those years. Also, Rhino released a box set of the Complete soundtrack of the Grateful Dead movie. 5 cds of pure Dead bliss!

For some good freebies go here:

Search for Grateful Dead and just about every concert they ever played is there, many in pristine soundboard quality. You can only stream the soundboards, but after you stream it the MP3 files stay in your temp internet folder. Just drag them to another folder and you got them!

Enjoy your Dead adventure.

I'd say the two essential albums - for me at least - are "Workingman's Dead" and "American Beauty" (both from 1970 if I remember correctly and both very song orientated and country-influenced) coupled with something from that 1972 tour - which you already have.

If you need more I can recommend a four CD-set: "Steppin' Out with the Grateful Dead - England '72" . Absolutely brilliant!!

Will also recommend a DVD "The Grateful Dead - New York City, October 1980" (playing time 164 minutes).

More of a curioso thing - do you know of a film/DVD called "The Festival Express" with Grateful Dead, The Band, Delaney and Bonnie, Janis Joplin and Buddy Guy on a trainride to different concerts? There are some magic moments aboard that train - plus a fair impression of what those times were like ;-)

Count me in. Big fan of their music. I'd say don't miss out on their early stuff

The link above is a great place to hear some great Dead boots.

Unfortunately I've never seen them live.

Absolutely love all Spring 1977 shows.

Of course, the best known is probably the Barton Hall/Cornell University on May 8th (or 9th?). I've always loved this version of Scarlett/Fire.

10/31/77 (Portland, OR) is also a great show. Jerry's solo on Peggy-O is so beautiful.

I'm not sure if this site is still up but it used to have a TON of shows for download.

Also check out www.internetarchive.org - lots of shows.

Workingman's Dead is the only studio album that I can consistently listen to, Pigpen ballin' that jack on Easy Wind is worth the price of admission alone.

Can't go wrong with any live release. I have a soft spot for Dead Set because it was my introduction to the band.

Don't be dismissive of 80's Dead, a fabulous era where Dylan covers were often the highlight. I strongly reccommend Postcards Of The Hanging. Dylan recently said that when he wants to add one of his old songs to his set, he goes back and listens to the GD arrangement and uses it (I am listening to When I Paint My Masterpeice right now)!

I saw the '87 Dylan & Dead show at Autzen in Eugene and thought it was fantastic. I have never understood why every critic in the world slags the Dylan and the Dead live album. It's not perfect but Slow Train Comin' is outstanding.

It's blasphemy to some, but I have never been able to get real excited about 60's GD, '72 and beyond is where I get fired up.

I'm tired, I'm tired of doing what I'm told.
Things are moving way too slow.

Love them. Seen them many times. There are just too many great live shows over their career to single out any in particular.

Read an interview with Keef once in which he remarked that loads of people love the Dead and he could not figure that out, long jamming not being Keith's cup of tea, I think.

I LIKE THE GRATEFUL DEAD BETTER THAN THE STONES . . ..

Listen to this show....it happened 34 years ago tonight. Plus you can listen to about 90% of the shows they ever did at this site:

The link below starts at 1995 and goes all the way back to the 60's.

I like the Dead......wouldn't call myself a DeadHead though.

I like various songs from various era's but you can't go wrong with Working Man's Dead, American Beauty (the best studio album!), Live/Dead, and Europe '72 (the best live album.....well its' sorta live) and Reckoning.

There are lots of good shows available as official releases......the "From The Vault" series, the Dick's Picks series (Harpur College 1970 is my all-time favorite) and several other releases like "Hundred Year Hall" and "Rockin' the Rhein" (Germany '72).

Grateful Dead fans are so spoiled.

Dick Pick # 5 is also great. I enjoyed that show a great deal- December 79, first set finished with Alabama Getaway into Promised land- blazing. Second set opened with Uncle Johns Band; the show finished with an encore of Shakedown Street back into Uncle Johns Band. Very good show.

I saw them from 1974 til Jerry passed away. 1977 to 1979 were my favorite. (saw them over 200 times- and I survived with a brain that still works- kind of).

how was the last few years of shows, 1990-1995? were they still great or was jerry already in too poor of health for the shows to be ace?

i saw them 66 times. they really filled a void for me when the stones broke up in '85 (right? i remember learning the news). they were a great way of life. we used to collect bootleg tapes. Be sure to see "The Grateful Dead Movie".

you know i had someone actually try and argue with me that they are the worst live band ever. he said the singing is always off key and tune and they playing was sloppy. i said who cares. you know they never played the exact same setlist. mick take note

They actually encouraged fans to tape their shows. Even so far as to reserve an area for fans to set up their equipment, if I remember this correctly.

anything from 1973
hundred year hall
try out some ratdog, bobby puts a great spin on the songs with horns and a loose jazzy jammy feel
the fillmore east 1969
people don't seem to like shakedown street but after repeated listens the album can grow on a person, it is like listening to a seed of shakedown or fire on the mountain, and then hear the massive tree the songs become in concert...

The Grateful Dead have always been my favourite band to see live. I've seen them roughly 150 times.

On the other hand, when I want to kick back and listen to studio albums, The Rolling Stones have always been my favourite.

In my opinion, The Dead went downhill after Brent died, late 1990. If you're exploring The Grateful Dead for the first time, stay away from the live shows from sept90-95.

I stopped going because the mix was bad and Jerry was exhausted. I gave away about 50 DVD's i had from this period, it was too painful to watch.

Blues For Allah is my favourite album.

The beauty of their live shows was, the constant changing of the setlist...if you saw 10 shows in a row, you would see a wide variety of songs.

I remember seeing that in the 'Anthem to Beauty' documentary. As I recall there was a restricted area for tapers, just in front of the Dead's soundguys.

There were some pretty sad shows then. There were a few at the Oakland Arena during the February shows (94, maybe 95) that were the only shows I left during the middle of. But, there were some good ones- 93 at Shoreling in San Francisco was good. I liked it so much, I went to see them again in Oregon- but those were not nearly as good.

The last 5 years they also pulled out some nice tunes from the past- Attics of my life, love light and so on. The worse shows were in 86/87 when they eventually had to cancel Ventura, Ca (I believe in 87). I remember seeing Jerry so smacked out that he was all white, and just stared at the ground and never moved. Jerry went into a coma and almost died then.

you sure thats not the setlists from later in the 80's? i know most of the songs from in the dark, released in 1987, in shows earlier then that but you listed touch of grey, west l.a. fadeaway, hell in a bucket, throwing stones and my brother essau and i didn't think that many songs that would end up on in the dark were done in 1983

They first did Throwing Stones in 82, yes those are the correct years. The Grateful Dead hated going into the studio. They got off on playing live shows. That's another funny thing about The Grateful Dead, when they released an album, all Deadheads knew the songs already, because they play them live first...then head into the studio and record them.

just checking. i knew they always played the songs live first. it just didn't seem to me that they started playing them that early. i have the remastered edition of in the dark with bonus tracks. has a cool 1982 studio version of touch of gray that sounds really different

brent added so many things to the band, he could write a decent song, he didn't shy away from playing anything other than paino(keith godchaux had issues with synthesisers, and such), he also took the vocals during shows that would give bobby and jerry a rest...welnick and hornsby had a tough time as jerry was very burnt out at this point in the bands career, it was difficult to get a constantly good set of shows...i stopped going to shows after 1990 because the crowds and people were just obnoxious and sleazy
