OT Happy Birthday Bob Dylan

Just wanted to recognize the nativity of a brilliant artist, one whose peak was higher than nearly any singer/songwriter you care to name.

For everyone who claims that the Beatles or even my sacred Velvets changed music, take a minute to reflect upon the fact that Bobby D had already given us HWY 61, Blonde On Blonde, The Basement Tapes, Bringing It All Back Home + all of his folk records & "retired" by 1966/7.

So there.

Happy birthday, Zimmy.

Really?

Wow.

How?

I can see maybe thinking BIABH is uneven, but in my (far less than humble) opinion, Highway 61 & Blonde On Blonde are absolutely perfect. The last 3 Dylan records, which seem to have both critics and fans all atwitter, I found to be pleasant enough at times, but really nothing special. For Dylan (whose standards are [admittedly] impossible to live up to) this late work is embarrassingly puerile lyrically and musically boring.
To each his own.

message from Patti Smith:

Bob Dylan

born May 24, 1941

"One of the feelings was that you were part of a special group of people that was outside and downtrodden. You felt like you were part of a different community, a more secretive one....In my mind, I'm still a member of a secret community. I might be the only one, you know?"

Bob Dylan was born in Duluth, Minnesota. When he was six his family moved to Hibbing. He felt the calling to play music and taught himself piano and guitar. As a young man he played in rock n roll bands then headed East. He spent time with Woody Guthrie, who was dying in the hospital. He learned from all he saw and heard. His work reflected political and social change as well as the changes within himself.

Bob Dylan has always been a private man so nothing will be added or taken away here. We hope he has a beautiful birthday and that the spirits of his secret community circle and greet him by name.
